Fabulous Friday!!!
Check out our Kindness Tree!!!!
We began the day writing our spelling test.
We then had French and then Gym.
After first recess and lunch we worked on a
division mental math activity. We then discussed strategies that we can use to
help us with division; for example: using arrays, multiplication, and figuring
out how many times the second number in the equation goes into the first:
Example:
6 divided by 3 =
Strategy 1:
Array: oo
oo
oo
There are 6 circles altogether. The 6
circles are arranged in groups of three. There are two circles in each group.
Therefore, 6 divided by 3 is 2.
Strategy 2:
Multiplication:
Our knowledge of fact families helps when
using multiplication to help with division. We would think about what number multiplied
by 3 would get us 6.
Fact family:
3x2=6
2x3=6
6 divided by 3 is 2
6 divided by 2 is 3
Strategy 3:
We think about, how many times does 3 go
into 6 (skip counting helps!)
3, 6
3 goes into 6, 2 times, so 2 is our answer!
Ms. Jaskolka is really impressed with how
quickly we are catching onto the concept of division!!!
We are reminded that when dividing, we always
begin our equation with the total number, and then how many groups and finally
our answer is how much in each group:
10 divided by 2 = 5
ooooo
ooooo
There are 10 circles altogether, there are
two groups, and 5 circles in each group so our equation would look like:
10 ÷ 2 = 5
At the end of the day we worked on our
cultural flag activity and our banner for the Christmas concert.
Have a wonderful weekend!
