We began the day with math. Our learning goal today was to find the surface area of a rectangular prism using the formula SA = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw. We were introduced to the surface area of a rectangular prism. Students came to understand that there must be three variables for any measurement formula for a prism; we use l, w, and h since b for base refers to the rectangular base of the prism. We learned we are finding the area of each rectangle and then adding them together to get the answer and when the sides are congruent you can multiply by 2.

The surface area of the prism is the sum of the areas of the rectangles.
The surface rea of the prism = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw
We write = SA = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw
OR SA= 2(lh + lw + hw)
-measured in units squared 

Surface area of a cube:

We find the area of one face and then multiply by six since a square has six congruent faces. 
When given the total amount you just need to divide by 6 since all the faces have the same area. 

Today’s Success criteria:
I understand that:
- the surface area of the prism is the sum of the areas of the rectangles
The surface rea of the prism = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw
We write = SA = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw
Another way:
SA= 2(lh + lw + hw) 
- for the surface area of a cube, when given the total amount you just need to divide by 6 and to get the length, divide that number by 3


Then we dove into UOI. We reviewed our research about Bernoulli’s principle.

During class we reviewed Bernoulli’s principle and how it related to the experiments we did yesterday.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we continued working on our book reports. We will finish these up tomorrow.

Next we had a Halloween party where we did a dramatic reading of our 'Before Midnight Poem', listened to Halloween music, danced, played and chit chatted with friends.
























At the end of the day we had physical education with Mr. Orr.

We began the day with Music and then dove into math. 





Students learned about using variables in measurement formulas to find the area and perimeter of a square and rectangle. Students were reminded of the word formulas for the perimeter and area of a squares and rectangles that they learned last year:

What does the area mean? (the number of congruent square units that fit in a figure)
What does perimeter mean? (The distance around a figure in units)

Students recalled that the area of a rectangle is base times height. Students needed to understand that the base of a rectangle is the side perpendicular to the height and, when we say “base times height,” we mean the length of the base multiplied by the length of the height.

We reviewed some examples as a class. Students understood the term variables, perimeter of a square, and that perimeter can also be written P=2b + 2h = 
perimeter is double the plus double the height 
Both formulas give the same answer 
P=2b + 2h = we double the base and height, then double the sum 

Today’s Success Criteria:

I understand that the perimeter and area of a rectangle and a square can be expressed using formulas
I know that the perimeter of a rectangle is P= 2 (b+h) or P = 2b + 2h
I know that the perimeter of a square is 4s
I know the area of a rectangle is A=bh
I know that variables in a formulas can represent different numbers 
I know that perimeter is written in unit and area is written in units squared 

Then we dove into UOI. Today we learned why hot air ballon fly. First we watched a video to see how we can make our own hot air balloon and then we watched a video which explained why hot air ballons fly.

Hot air balloons fly when the air inside the hot air balloon is less dense than the air surrounding it. Hot air is less dense than cool air; the heated air causes the balloon to rise simply because it is lighter than the cold air around it. This is called Buoyancy. 


After first recess and lunch, we had French. 

Then we began our inquiry into flight!!! We did various experiments today to explore how high pressure air (low speed) and low pressure (high speed) air are used create lift! We will apply todays learning to understand why planes fly. We were challenged to research about Bernoulli’s principle and to problem solve how our experiments relate to Bernoulli’s principle. 










After second recess and lunch we continued working on our book report for the City of Ember.

Tremendous Tuesday!

Guess what!!!

For our upcoming Christmas concert, our class will be doing a scene from Charlie' Brown's Christmas. If students are able to find the movie online, they are encouraged to watch it. We began the day with math. We continued our explorations of polyhedrons. We used the 3-D shapes we made yesterday to answer questions about their attributes: faces (how many and what kind), edges, vertices, parallel faces, congruent faces, and/or perpendicular faces. All relevant vocabulary was given to the students and is in their duo tang to reference.  

Then we wrote our test on properties of air. 

Next, we worked on our electric cars. 

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we worked on our book reports for The City of Ember. 

At the end of the day we had physical education with Mr. Orr.

Marvellous Monday!

We began the day with Music.

Then we wrote our book report for City of Ember. We will continue this tomorrow.

After first recess and lunch we we had French.

Then we inquired into 3-D shapes. We built various 3-D shapes and identified the name of the shape, the net, the faces, edges and vertices and whether the shape was a regular polyhedron. We were very open-minded and cooperative when we worked together to build the shapes and answer questions about the shapes. We will use these shapes to answer more questions about them tomorrow.








After second recess and lunch we did a review for our properties of air test tomorrow.
