Monday March 25, 2019

Marvelous Monday!

Grade 6 students are preparing for exhibition!!! They began their day watching videos and reading letters from previous Grade 6 students at SJA who offered advice on the challenges and successes they experienced with exhibition.

We then had a workshop done by Mrs. Chin on critical thinking and web literacy!!! Ask us what we learned today!!!!

Students will learn their exhibition issues, group members, and mentors tomorrow. Grade 6 parents are invited to attend an Exhibition Information Session this Thursday, March 28th, from 4:00 pm – 4:30 pm. This will take place in Room 24. The purpose of the information session is to give parents an overview of the expectations of exhibition, the various roles, and to answer questions families may have.

After first recess and lunch we marked our math homework from over the March break.

Then we had Music.

When we returned, we learned about using percents to draw circle graphs.

Learning Goals: use circle graphs to display data and solve problems

Students were reminded of the hundreds charts they shaded to show percents. Students were told that a percent circle is similar to a hundred chart in that they are both divided into 100 congruent parts. In both cases, each part represents 1% of the whole. In the percent circle, we call each part a sector. Every sector is marked with a short line segment, with the 5, the 15th, 25th, and so on, sectors having slightly longer segments, and every 10thsector has a line segment with one line end point at the centre of the circle. This makes it easier to read percents displayed on the circle.

-How would you shade a percent circle to represent 10 %? (I would shade the sector between 2 segments that meet at the centre.
-How would you shade a percent circle to represent 3% (I would shade 3 small sectors) To represent 100? 50?

We went through some examples as a class and then did some as a class.

Success Criteria:

-I can use the data provided to find the percentage
-I can make a circle graph using a protractor
-I can make a circle graph by multiplying the decimal by 360 degrees
-I can use each percent and decimal to make a circle graph of the data provided

After second recess and lunch, students then spent some time reflecting on our Canada in the World inquiry unit.

On Thursday, students will be treated to a Junior Achievement workshop titled Be Entrepreneurial. This workshop will take place all day this Thursday, March 28th and will be hosted by FedEx. There is no cost for the workshop.

Homework:

1.    Read Daily
2.    Math pg. 309-310 Questions 1-4
3.    Student Reflection
4.    Spring Fundraiser form due Thursday

5.    Gym day tomorrow
