Wednesday April 5, 2017

Wonderful Wednesday!

We began the day having French with Mlle. Jessica.

We then began writing our review for our upcoming test Addition and Subtraction to 100.

Next we had gym.

When we returned, we continued working on our Math reviews.

Following first recess and lunch we continued to explore migration and the reasons that people migrate from one country to another. We first read a book titled Migrant and we followed the story of a girl named Anna who wished that she was like a tree and could stay rooted in one place but instead she was like a bird moving back and forth between her home country and Canada. We learned that her family needed to make the journey to Canada so that they could make more money and then they would go home for fall and winter where there were not as many job opportunities. After our discussion about this book we worked in groups to come up with the many reasons people choose to migrate. We then worked as a class to organize the many push and pull factors we came up with. We started to see a pattern and managed to classify the push and pull factors under four categories: environmental, social, political and economy.

After second recess and lunch we imagined and wrote about ourselves as borrowers. Students really used their creativity skills for this fun activity!

Tremendous Tuesday!

We began the day having French with Mlle. Jessica.

During math, we picked a question that we made with our partners and solved it together as a class. We then showed our understanding of two digit addition and subtraction using a place mat in our math books.

Next we were off to gym.

When we returned, we continued with math.

After first recess and lunch we had Music.

During UOI, we reflected upon our learning from yesterday and our understanding of push and pull factors. We talked more about Malak and why she would need to leave Syria. During our conversation we discovered how lucky we are to be living in such a safe country where we have so many incredible opportunities available to us. We then looked at an article about the Fort McMurray Fire that happened in Alberta. We read about children who were living in Fort McMurray who needed to pack their items quickly so they could be safe away from the fire; we looked into their most special possessions and what they found most important to take with them:
Students were then given the following scenario:

Imagine you are an immigrant who is about to come to Canada. You are about to leave your country, possibly forever, and you must decide what items you must take to your new home. What would you want to bring?
Then our challenge was: Look back at your list, can you carry everything you wrote down?
Children were reminded considering how small their suitcase would be, they were choose only 4 items that you would take to Canada. We shared our most treasured possessions in groups.
I will post the responses tomorrow.

-       After second recess and lunch we wrote in our journals. Our journal prompt was: How would you feel if your parents told you that you were leaving Canada tonight? Explain why.

At the end of the day,  we finished reading chapter 3 of The Borrowers.

Marvelous Monday!

We began the day having French with Mlle. Jessica.

We then moved onto math. We will be having our test next Monday on two-digit addition and subtraction using a place value mat so we worked in partners to practice for our test.  Working in partners, we took turns creating addition and subtraction problems and solving the problems our partners made for us using manipulative (tens and one) and white boards.  After we created an addition or subtraction word problem with our partner and then we picked one to solve as a class.

We then had physical education.

When we returned, we continued working with our partners solving word problems using a place value mat.

Following first recess and lunch we joined the other Grade 2 class to understand why people move from one country to another and how they feel.  Children first watched a video about push and pull factors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nai-Rjg7QF4. As a year group we discussed and created a classroom chart about the reasons people may leave their country and come to Canada. We then watched a video about a 7-year-old girl from Syria, Malak, who needed to leave her country to live a safer life. We then had our own GUEST SPEAKER – Ms. Baimas! She spoke to the class about moving to Canada and the decisions faced with moving. She also spoke about how she felt when faced with such a big decision.

After second recess and lunch we wrote out our review words and working in our spelling books.

We then began reading chapter 3 of The Borrowers. Students made a very important connection today!!!! We discussed how our novel study relates to our current unit of inquiry. The borrowers we have decided are little people and they are moving from house to house because they are continuously faced with dangers; these dangers we determined are push factors. So we concluded that the borrowers are migrating from country to country to find a safe home. Grade job Grade 2’s!!!!!
