Tremendous Tuesday!

We have two actions stars today!!

Kareena shared some items from Japan!!!

Hayden decided to make various flags from around the world!!!

We began the day having French with Mlle. Jessica.

We then moved onto math. We learned what happens to a number when we add 10 and how counting by tens and multiples of ten can help us work on our mental addition. We first added 10 to various numbers and noticed that the numbers in the ones column stays the same and the numbers in the tens column increases by one.
Example:
26
36
46
56
On the hundred’s chart, when we added ten to any number, we found that in order to find the answer, we just needed to go down the column that our number is found. For example, if we began with the number 7 and added 10, the answer is 17, which is found under the 7 on the hundred’s chart. We then came to the realization that we can count by tens when adding numbers with multiples of ten. For instance:
33+20
We know that 10 goes into 20 two times so we can use our mental addition abilities and add ten twice to 33 (33+10=44, 44+10=54)
We then showed our understanding in our Math Makes Sense book.

We then had physical education with Mr. H.

When students returned, we continued working on our mental addition using 10 and multiples of 10.

Following first recess and lunch, we had Music.

When students returned, we continued working on Math.

After, we read a book to better understand Ramadan. We learned that Muslims celebrate Ramadan and it is a time to get closer to Allah. During Ramadan some people make the choice to fast so that they can feel how people feel when they go hungry. This way, they are able to understand how hunger feels like and empathize with those who do not have very much money. As a result, some people choose to give food and money to people in need. We learned that after Ramadan comes the celebration of Eid. This is a time of fun and also a time for giving thanks to Allah. We then looked back at one of our key concepts for this unit, which is connection. We all thought about holidays and traditions that we celebrated and made connections between our own traditions and Ramadan and Eid.

After second recess and lunch, we continued learning about Ramadan.
After we headed over to Ms. Baimas’ class and we talked about the Christmas concert. We will be doing a skit and a song. On Monday, we will be holding auditions for the skit for all the grade 2’s. We are looking for a Grinch and a few narrators. Those students interested will have an opportunity to audition on Monday.
