Wonderful Wednesday!!

We began the day writing our homework in our agendas and Ms. Jaskolka explained two upcoming projects:

DUE: April 1, 2016

Country Brochure Information:

-Students were each given a country to research
-Students will perform research about this country and fill out the package given
-Students will complete the research and package at home
-They will use the information to create a brochure in class
-We will be starting our brochures April 1st
-The whole package that is going home needs to be done by this time, at home
-Students are also asked to find pictures that will go onto their brochure (4-6)
-Pictures need to be small because we will be using regular size paper to make the brochures

Summative project:

Each student is being asked to design a paper doll that represents the country his/her family is from. Students were given a paper doll shape with them today. Students are to cut out the body and add fabric, buttons, or anything else to show your child’s culture.

Also, each student will complete an information sheet about his/her family’s culture.

This will be done at home and presented at school.

This project is due April 11.

We then watched the poem and speech competition against the Maples. Joshua did a great job getting second place!!!

After first recess and lunch, we practiced trading in math. We looked at various questions on the board and determined if we would need to trade or not. We figured out that when we are adding two-digit numbers together, we can figure out whether or not we will need to trade by looking at the 1s column. If the two numbers in the 1s column are less than 9, we will not need to trade but if the sum is 10 or more, we will need to trade 10 ones for 1 ten stick. Students then answered various questions using a place value mat.

We then watched the Shakespeare Play.

At the end of the day, we had the chance to share what we did over the March break.

Homework:
1.     Read for 20 minutes
2.     Spelling test tomorrow
3.      Country Brochure due April 1
4.     Summative due April 11
5.     Lunch forms due March 29

6.     Easter colours tomorrow

Terrific Tuesday!!

****Math homework: I sent home 1 place value mat with the students that they will use for pg. 159 when solving their own story problem.
Pg. 160: students will trade with a partner at school, please complete the first part at home.
Pg. 161: Students can make their own place value mat to help them with this page using scrap paper.

We began the day with our exciting field trip to Fo Guang Shan temple. When we came in, we met our tour guide, who taught us so much about Buddha and Buddhism. We were excellent inquirers asking so many questions!!

We then came back for first recess and lunch.

Students then had Music.

After students had French with Mdm. Stella.

When students returned, we continued learning about addition with two digit numbers using a place value mat. We first did a question together as a class:
The grade 1’s and grade 2’s are going to a show. There are 42 grade 1’s and 36 grade 2 children going. How many grade 1 and grade 2 children are going to the show?
We showed how to model 42 using the place value mat and 36.
42: is 4 tens and 2 ones
36: is 3 tens and 6 ones.
We figured out that we now have 7 tens and 8 ones so 78 students went to the show altogether.
We then moved onto another question:
The grade 2’s put on their own show. They had blue tickets for kids and yellow tickets for adults. They gave out 28 blue tickets and 37 yellow. How many people came to the show?
We determined that we have 15 ones so we need to make a group of ten and add it to the ten’s column (there are two columns on a place value mat – one for 1’s and one for 10’s). When we have 10 one’s we trade them for 1 ten stick; we need to ensure to cross out the 1’s that we used to make the ten stick and also that we add one more ten stick to the 10’s column.
Students showed their understanding in their math books, answering similar questions on their own.

Homework:
1.    Read for 20 minutes
2.   Math pg. 158-161

3.   Lunch forms due March 29

Magnificent Monday!

We began the day writing out homework in our agendas and then our unit 22 spelling words.

We then had physical education with Mr. Slyk.

After we began our new math unit. We looked at the Big Math Book and saw the various ways that the number 67 was shown. We saw it on a hat, shirts, hundred’s chart, dog collar.  We then discussed what we knew about the number 67. 67 is less than 100, 67 is greater than 50, it is quite a bit more than 10, close to 65. Other ways that we could show the number 67 is using ten frames (6 ten frames and 7 counters) and 6 ten sticks and 7 individual cubes. We then had a similar conversation about the number 48. We discussed how 48 is close to 50, it is an even number, it is 4 tens 8 ones. The ways we can show 48 are: 4 ten frames and 8 counters, sets of tallies, 4 ten sticks and 8 individual cubes, 48 in words. 48 is smaller than 67, on 100 chart its 2 rows above 67, 48 is even 67 is odd. We also used a place value mat to represent the numbers 48:

After first recess and lunch we discussed Easter during our unit of inquiry. Students worked in partners and practiced their research skills. They read information about how Easter is celebrated in Canada. After, students picked out the important information and filled out a fun graphic organizer.

We then had French with Mdm. Stella.

After second recess and lunch, we began reading Flat Stanley: Japanese Ninja surprise. We met Arthur and Stanley Lambchop. We learned that Stanley became flat because a bulletin board fell on him in his sleep; he was unharmed but his body became flat. Arthur and Stanley are both big fans of Oda Nobu, a movie star who plays the character of a Samurai. They both really want to meet Oda Nobu but he lives all the way in Japan! Stanley came up with the idea that we would mail himself in an envelope and get sent to Japan to meet Oda Nobu.
