Tremendous Thursday!!
***Tomorrow is spirit day so your child is asked to
dress in their house colours.
***I have sent an email with the student handbook.
Please read it over with your child and bring in the last page tomorrow signed.
We began the day having French with Mdm. Stella.
After, we began a summer writing flip flap book, which
includes writing an acrostic poem for the word summer (we practiced together
with WATER) and using adjectives to describe our summer. We are also practicing
our summarization skills by retelling what we did over the summer.
After we had art with Ms. Kerr.
Following first recess and lunch we wrote our homework in
our agendas and then were off to physical education with Ms. Lovan.
When students returned we began our Unit of inquiry, How we organize ourselves. We began our
discussion by defining the word community and then discussing important
elements that we would find in our own communities. Here is what we came up
with:
After, we learned four important elements of a community:
food, shelter, recreation and clothing. We went out to discuss why these
elements could be different all around the world. We concluded that weather and
culture play a big role in the clothing, food, shelter, and recreation in a
certain community. We then looked at a map of the world and came to know the
important features of a map: compass, title, colours, and a legend. We used
this knowledge to make a map of our classroom. We needed to ensure that we had
a title, different colours for various objects, and a legend so that anyone who
looked at our map could understand what each shape represented.
Following second recess and lunch, we continued working on
our maps of the classroom. Those who were finished continued working on their
summer scoop flip flap book.
