Terrific Tuesday!
We began the day having French with Mlle.
Jessica.
After French, we began our new Math
unit: Exploring Addition and Subtraction. We looked a picture in the Big Math
Book of people at a fair. We discussed various addition and subtraction stories
that we could come up with. After, we discussed various addition and
subtraction strategies that we can use: counting on/back, look for doubles and
near doubles, using fact families. We did some examples as a class and then moved
on to working in our Math books.
Next, we had physical education
with Mr. H.
When we returned, we
practiced the “find ten” and “near doubles” strategies to help us count
three 1 digit numbers.
Find ten example: 7+3+8
7+3 = 10
10 + 8 = 18
When we use the find ten
strategy, the first two numbers we use add up to 10. We use this strategy
because it is easier to add on from 10.
Near doubles
Example:
4 + 5 + 2
-1
4+4=8+1=9
9+2=11
Example:
8 + 7 + 5
+1
8+8=16-1=15
15+5=20
We use this strategy to
help us count faster and to practice our mental addition.
Following
first recess and lunch we finished working on our cultural flag projects. We
then practiced our presentations in partners. After we presented our projects
in front of the class:

used detail to explain our favourite holiday. We ensured to include proper
writing conventions within our work.
