Marvelous Monday!

We began the day working on our Math Review.

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we worked on our Ontario Writing Assessment showing our understanding of how to write a persuasive letter.

Then we had Music.

When we returned, we continued work on our OWA.

At the end of the day we learned about the Human Development Index during UOI.

Learning Goal: Studentsdistinguish between developed and developing nations and describe what is meant by the Human Development Index.
First, we checked for understanding of key concepts. We Identified and gave examples of Social, Political, Economic or Physical aspect of a nation and the PEPS that USA and Canada share.

Next,
• Investigating ‘quality of life’: If you had to rank and compare what makes for a ‘good life’ or a good ‘quality of life’, what would you be looking to evaluate?” Think about what circumstances of a country positively contribute to the lives of its people?

Understanding,
• The Human Development Index: the HDI measures the quality of life of a country based on 3 key areas: life expectancy, knowledge and standard of living. Students predicted where Canada, the USA and 3 other countries might be on the HDI. Then we all used this website to determine if our predictions were correct:

• Distinguishing between Developed and Developing nations: “What does Canada’s ranking tell us about our quality of life as Canadians?” We used this question as a diving point into understanding Developed vs. Developing nations. We identified what determines a developed and developing country:

• concept of ‘Global Village’: We imagined that the whole world was shrunk down into one village of 100 people and made predictions such as: how many people would have computers (1!).

We also watched:

We will use today’s knowledge of developing and developed countries to pick a developing country and make a brochure about that developing country and encouraging people to come a visit this developing country. And on Friday, we will have an ambassador’s tea party where we will discuss with the other ambassador’s about why they should trade and come visit our country!!!

Success Criteria: I can …
·      define the Human Development Index
·      explain what is meant by a developed country using examples, the HDI, and regions on the world map
