Wonderful and snowy Wednesday!

We began the day with math.

Our Learning Goal: Identify the conditions for congruence

Success Criteria:

I understand that two triangles are congruent if they have the same 3 sides; if two sides and the angle between the two sides are the same; or if 2 angles and the side between them are the same
-two polygons are congruent if all corresponding sides are equal and all corresponding angles are equal

We worked as a class to understand how to identify congruent figures:

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we identified items on our treasure map and the countries they came from; we pinned these new countries on our classroom map.

Then we had Music.

After we continued with UOI.

1.    Learning Goal: Increase in knowledge of the names and locations of countries in the world.

Students watch Jimmy Kimmel’s Name that Country Clip and after we discussed why IB students need to know about the world. We determined we wanted to be like the boy in the video and not the adults who did not know how to find any countries on a map!

2.    Learning Goal: Define the key aspects of a country/region (state its attributes/ characteristics) and give examples of it.
Students were introduced to concepts social, political, economic and physical through a cooperative group activity using photos/pictures and post-cards.
Success Criteria: I can define PEPS as follows …
Physical: refers to the physical landscape of the earth.
Economic: refers to forms of trade, work, or any money related activities.
Political: refers to government activities, laws, or any symbols related to these ideas.
Social: refers to people and the cultures, beliefs, and traditions that define them.

Students worked in groups and were given photos from the four categories: physical, economic, political and social. Students looked carefully at the photos and tried to group them into different categories.
Questions we considered during this activity:
o Could any of the items in one group be placed in another?
o Could any of these items be classified in other ways?
o What is similar about your photos that make them part of the same category?
• Drawing upon the common attributes/ essential features of each concept that students provide, we came up with class definitions of each concept.

3.     Learning Goal: Students learned about key concepts such as trade, import and export and through mapping, about Canada’s top trading partners and the economic interdependence and interconnections between countries.

Economic (Trade) – We referred to our treasure map to discuss how Canada receives products from other countries and sells products to other countries.
As a class we defined:
IMPORTS- all goods and services which a country buys from another country. These are products that come into the country.
EXPORTS- all goods and services which a country sells to another country. There are products that exit (or leave) a country.

We then worked on an activity Identifying Canada’s Trading Partners: We were given information about the 10 top countries that Canada imports from and exports to.

Finally, we played a fun game to better understand Canada’s interdependence and interconnectedness with countries from around the world.
o There was one student in the middle as Canada.
The student in the middle represented Canada and the rest of us represented other countries based on imports and exports.
o A ball of wool was given to the Canada student and they read the statement out loud. When a student heard their country’s name, they were given the wool and then read their statement (e.g. Canada exports oil to China.)
We had a lot of fun with this game!
After we were asked:
o What does the string represent? (economic links)
o What does this tell us about the interconnections between countries?
o What does this game tell us about how countries depend on one another?
o What do you think the tension in the string is supposed to represent? (conflict between countries)

All the countries we found connections with!

1.    Read Daily
OXFAM lesson 3
3.    Finish Canada’s trading map

4.    Math sheets on congruent figures
