Wonderful Wednesday!
We have an action star today!!! We are
learning about transportation from the past and how people migrated in the past
using various forms of transportation. So today Tayler decided to dress how
princesses would dress in the past!!! Great action Tayler!!!
We began the day writing a recount about
our fun day yesterday at the museum!!! First we talked about what is a recount:
a recount is to retell about a topic in order.
Here is our recount that we created as a
class:
Here are some more pictures also:
Next we had French and then gym.
After first recess and lunch we had Music.
Next we had a special surprise!!! We were
invited to the school next door!!! They had a Science Fair today and we were
given the opportunity to explore all their cool experiments!
When we returned we dove into math. Today
we focused on using mental math strategies for subtraction. We practiced how to
use a splitting strategy and friendly numbers to subtract two digit numbers.
Splitting:
When using the splitting strategy we split
the numbers into the tens and ones column:
38+25
tens ones
38=
30 8
25=
- 20 - 5
10 +
3 =13
Using friendly numbers we find numbers that
make it easy to subtract or add from (for example any multiples of ten)
38- 25
For 38 a friendly number is 30
30-25=5
Then I would do 5+8 (from the 38) which equals 13
Here is another example:
For the homework, students can apply these
mental math strategies or use the standard algorithm.
After second recess and lunch we read a
very exciting book called The Bravest
Fish. In the story Stanley woke up late and his school of fish was gone!!!!
He realized they were supposed to swim to cooler waters today! He went to the
meeting point but no one was there!! Then we saw a shining light and swam
towards it but he found out it was just a grumpy lobster counting his coins.
The lobster wanted Stanley to leave him alone and pointed the way he saw his
friends went. Next he was so excited because he saw on of his friends but when
he swam closer to it he bumped into a pearl! He realized that it was only his
reflection! He continued to swim along and a shark started to follow him!!
Stanley swam as fast as he could into a cave to get away!! Finally Stanley
realized he needed to be brave so that he could find his friends. He decided to
come out of the cave and he found his friends!! Stanley was a risk take and it
paid off!!!
We used this fun story to begin writing our
own recount. We will continue our recount tomorrow.
Have a great night!
