Magnificent Monday!
We began the day having French with
Mdm. Stella.
When students returned we reviewed
the summative assessment for our unit of inquiry that students will begin on
Wednesday. Students will be working on the assessments in class. A rubric and
an outline of the assignment are going home today. We then worked on a Venn
diagram, finding comparisons and differences between Mississauga and India. We
focused on food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation.
We then read How to build your
own country by Valerie Wyatt so that we have a better idea about how to
create our own countries. After we came up with the name of our country and
plotted it on our individual world map.
After first recess and lunch we had
physical education with Ms. Lovan.
In math, we focused on addition and
subtraction. We were first given a question by Ms. Jaskolka, and we solved it
as a class:
- There are 9 people on a train. At the next
stop, 4 more people get on.
- How can we find out how many people are on
the elevator now?
o
Add
- How many people are on the train?
o
9 and
4 more = 13
- What addition sentence would you write for
this story?
o
9+4=13
- At the next stop, 2 people get off the
train. How can you find out how many people are on the train?
o
Subtract
– 13-2 =11 – count back 2 from 13
- What subtraction sentence would you write
for this story?
o
13-2=11
- The train stops again and some people get
off. Six people are left on the train. How many got off? How do you know?
o
5 (6
and what is 11? Or subtract 6 from 11)
- What is the subtraction sentence?
o
11-5=6
After, we worked in our MMS books.
We were given addition and subtraction picture stories and we needed to come up
with the addition and subtraction sentences. We then came up with our own.
Next, we learned about adding
detail to our sentences. We first went over what we need to ensure to have in a
sentence: Capital, end mark (period), noun and a verb. We also knew that in
order to make great sentences we include adjectives (descriptive words). We
then went into more depth about how we add more detail and we learned they way
to do so is by asking:
Who?
What?
Where?
When?
Why?
How?
We did two examples as a class
(sorry if it is a bit confusing) and tomorrow students will be practicing
adding detail to sentences.
After second recess and lunch,
students wrote their homework in their agendas and then began working on their
unit 4 Spelling words.
Homework:
1. Read for 20 minutes
2. Spelling pg. 17-20 (Lesson 4)
3. Cursive pg. 12-15
4. Country flag due October 13
5. DRA graphs went home today
