Tremendous Thursday!

We began the day with math. We learned about ratios and that a ratio can be used to compare parts of a whole and one part of a whole to another part of the whole.

Learning Goal: to learn that a ratio can be used to compare parts of a whole and one part of a whole to another part of the whole

What is a ratio?

We did an activity together to gain a better understanding of ratios. We used counters and discussed the different ways that we can compare the counters. We used words and numbers and mathematical symbols. How can you compare the number of blue to yellow? (There are 6 blue and 9 yellow; 6 out of 15 are blue; 3 or more are yellow). What other ways can you compare the counters? (There are twice as many red counters as there are blue counters; 12 out of 27 counters are red; there are 3 more red counters than yellow counters; for every blue counter, there are 2 red counters)
We used comparison words such as: ‘to’ ‘more than’ for every’ ‘as many as’ and ‘out of’. We were also introduced to the terms ratio, part-to-whole, part-to-part ratio and terms of the ratio

Part to whole:
The number of items in the whole is always written last

Part to part:
The order of the terms does not matter, but we must communicate the meaning; for example, we must say whether the ratio is cars to planes or planes to cars

Students then worked on questions on pages 47-8 Questions 1-3, 5, 6, 7, 8 (a-d)

Success Criteria:
I understand that a ratio can be used to compare:
-parts of a whole
-one part of a whole to another part of the whole

Then we got into our literature circles and shared our role for chapter 9.

After, we continued working on our electric cars. Today many students worked on building the body of their cars and some are now trying to figure out how to get their cars to move using an electric circuit!

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we worked on our UOI summative projects. Students continued making jot notes for their chosen generating station/uranium. Students were reminded when taking jot notes that they are putting the information into their own words. Students are also reminded that it is very important to use the checklist provided for any project because the checklist stipulates what needs to be included in the project. Tomorrow, students will work on their slideshow and then begin presenting their arguments to the government (A.K.A our classmates) on Wednesday about which generating station would meet the needs of Mississauga’s growing population/about which countries we should trade uranium with.

After second recess and lunch we had physical education.

Homework:

1.     Read daily
2.     International Day research
3.     Read chapter 10 and role

4.     Math pg. 47-8 Questions 1-7, 8 a-d
