Fantastic Friday!
Parents please bring in costumes for our
holiday concert on Monday. For the Christmas
concert, students are able to come up with their own villian costumes or come
dressed in jeans and a red or green shirt. Students without a costume will be
given a big E to tape on their shirt to represent evil.
I have an important message
for all my students. I know that the holidays are approaching and we are all so
excited to have some time off. We need to remember though, that when we are at
school, there is still important learning that needs to get done in the
classroom. We need to make sure that we are still trying our best every day and
using our classroom time wisely. Ms. Jaskolka appreciates all your hard work!
We had a very busy
and exciting day!
We began the day
doing our unit 13 spelling test and writing our homework in our agendas.
Afterwards, we took part in the ArtReach program. We were learning from Diana, an artist, how to make a Christmas ornament using a cinnamon stick. We used paint for the body, face, nose, eyes, and mouth. For the beard, Diana mixed sand and white paint to create a really cool texture for the beard. We also made a wintery house and pine tree out of clay. Ms. Jaskolka took some videos to explain the process.
After first recess
and lunch we had French.
After French, we
did an experiment to see how weight on the bottom and top of a structure can
effect its stability. Watch us perform our experiment and explain what we
learned:
After second
recess and lunch, we learned about adding and subtracting two digit numbers.
When adding and
subtracting, we need to make sure to begin with the ones column.
When adding, if
the sum of the numbers in the ones column equal 9 or more, we need to make sure
to carry over.

When subtracting
we need to keep in mind that sometimes we may need to borrow from the neighbour
next door:

________[we
cannot take 9 away from 4 so we need to borrow from the tens column]
24 (the 2 represents 20)
-

______
24
- 19
_____
First
we need to borrow 10 from the 20 and give it to the 4.
20-10=10
We then give the 10 to the 4: 10 +4 =14
We
can now subtract 14 from 9 and that gives us 5.

Since
we borrowed 10 from the 20, the 2 now becomes a 1.

Students were given an addition and subtraction package to practice adding and subtracting two digit numbers. It is important that students understand how to do so for our current math unit.
Homework:
1. Read for 20 minutes: this is important to
help students build upon their reading and comprehension skills. When reading,
students can:
-use
the Daily 5 strategy: Read the pictures, read the words, and then retell the
story
-when retelling the story, the
students use the pictures and what they remember happened
-retell
the story without using the book ensuring to use their own words
and putting the events and details in order
-First, Next, Then, Last
-discuss your favourite part or
character and explaining why: students make sure that you use evidence from the
book to explain your reasoning
-Think about the author’s message: Why
do you think the author wrote the book you are reading? Is the author trying to
teach you about something important?
