Marvelous Monday!
We began the day
having French with Mdm. Stella.
After we became ad
detectives. We looked at various pictures and we were looking out for the
advertisement. The first one was a poster of Tiger Woods holding a golf club.
We figured out that the advertisement was for Nike; the Nike logo is on his hat.
“Nike
is paying Tiger Woods about $100 million to use Nike products for five years.
Pretty smart advertising, huh? People really look up to athletes.” We also saw
in a video game the logo for Taco Bell. “Taco Bell made a "promotional
partnership" deal with X-Box video games. That means that you see Taco
Bell ads in X-Box games, and X-Box promotions in Taco Bell stores.” We then
spotted the Old Navy logo on a sweater that a woman was wearing. “Old Navy has
made this woman a "walking billboard." Everywhere she goes with this
shirt on, she is advertising for Old Navy. Ever wonder why so many clothing
companies have their names all over their clothes? Now you know, and now you
are Media Smart.” This prompted Krina to understand that she too is a walking
billboard because she brought in a gap sweater today.
Karina, Krina, Aanika, Ronit, and Avaneesh also
noticed the logos on their shoes and socks. Students also shared how they have
been action stars. Ms. Jaskolka is impressed with all of the media literacy the
students are practicing!
Actions Stars!
Karina: was eating honey nut cheerios and on the box it said made
with real honey but she read the ingredients and did not see any honey!
Karina: noticed the s – logo for skittles
Aanika: was eating ritz crackers and it said made with real cheese,
she checked on the back, no real cheese was found!
Manny: was eating peanut butter cheerios- he said the commercial
said made with real peanut butter - checked on the back –mom helped him read
the ingredients and did not see any peanut butter
Avaneesh – was eating chocolate cheerios- said made with real chocolate
– he checked on the back and figured out they just take like chocolate
Ronit: was eating Goldfish – the wrapper says made with real cheese
– he checked on back and nothing was said about cheese
Bosco: skittles - read ingredients not healthy - couldn't understand
a lot of the words
Marcus: noticed that food colouring is used in skittles
Krina – came to the conclusion that she might not want to eat starbursts
anymore because we read the ingredients in class and she will also ask her mom
to check the ingredients of candy she eats
We then looked at a print advertisement of McDonalds.
We discussed as a class the techniques, purpose, and target audience for this
ad.
When students were finished, they moved on to
their lesson 9 spelling words.
After second recess and lunch, students had
physical education with Ms. Lovan.
When students returned we were exploring
the Calendar. We looked at our class calendar and discussed what the calendar
shows us, the month we are in, and what day it is. We sang days of the week
song and a song to help remember all the months and what order they go in. We
were given a calendar of November and we needed to copy it properly making sure
we began on Sunday and ended on Sunday. We realized that November has 30 and
not 31 days. We answered questions about the calendar to show our knowledge
about calendars:
circle the
first Tuesday of the month; circle the last Saturday of the month; put an x on
the day a week from today; circle the last day of the month; colour the
weekdays yellow and the weekend blue; how many days are in a week. We did a lot
of practice with the calendar today!
When students were finished, they continued
working on their spelling words.
At the end of the day, we began working on our
science fair. We first learned about the important steps that scientists take
when performing an experiment:
We then did some background research about our
topic. We are learning about the affect that cold and warm temperatures can
have on objects. In doing our background research, we learned that heat affects
everything around us. We will be focusing on how heat can change how a material
expands (grows larger) and when the temperature does down, a material contracts
or grows smaller. Today we focused on our question and hypothesis:
Here are the scientists in our class doing important work:
Homework:
1. Read for 20 minutes
2. Spelling pg. 37-40
3. Cursive pg. 34-35
