Fantastic Friday!

Just a reminder: After care is due Dec 14 and January lunch orders are due Dec 16

We began the day having an assembly and playing an exciting house game.

We then had our unit 12 spelling test.

During UOI, we reviewed the video we watched last class about structures. We learned that buildings are made with steel beams to support them and that these beams need to be strong. We also discussed the various questions architects ask before designing a structure such as: what is the purpose/function of the structure (what will the structure be used for); how big of an area is needed for the structure. After, we looked at pictures of various objects and we needed to figure out the purpose/function.
Then we completed a sheet where we needed to figure out what was the purpose/function of an object.

After first recess and lunch, we moved onto Math. We looked at a picture of various groups of animals and figured out different ways that we could count them. One example: we had 17 baby goats (kids) and 6 more were put on display. We determined that we could count them in different ways:
-17 + 6 =23
-7+6 = 13 plus 10 more =23
-17+3 = 20 plus 3 more =23

Students then worked in their math workbooks, practicing adding two digit numbers and coming up with addition stories. We then worked on word problems where we needed to decide if we needed to add and subtract based on key words (all together; left over).

After second recess and lunch, we practiced for the Christmas Concert.

We then continued working on addition and subtraction of two digit numbers.

Homework:
Read for 20 minutes: this is important to help students build upon their reading and comprehension skills. When reading, students can:
-use the Daily 5 strategy: Read the pictures, read the words, and then retell the story
-when retelling the story, the students use the pictures and what they remember happened
-retell the story without using the book ensuring to use their own words and putting the events and details in order
-First, Next, Then, Last
-discuss your favourite part or character and explaining why: students make sure that you use evidence from the book to explain your reasoning
-Think about the author’s message: Why do you think the author wrote the book you are reading? Is the author trying to teach you about something important?
