Wonderful Wednesday!
We began the day having French with Mdm. Stella.
When students returned, we inquired into the strength of various objects. First we made predictions and decided which object was the strongest and the weakest; we used paper, stir sticks, straws, and cardboard.
Tomorrow is Year Ahead day! Students
will be joining Ms. Bosetti tomorrow!
Structure Information
Students will bring in a photo of a structure they are familiar with. They will research information about their structure, including the materials used to build it, it’s location and it’s function (what an object is used for). Students will present their structure to the class on Friday, December 11, 2015. These are to be done at home and ready to present on Friday.
When students returned, we inquired into the strength of various objects. First we made predictions and decided which object was the strongest and the weakest; we used paper, stir sticks, straws, and cardboard.
After, we put pennies on each
object to see if our predictions were correct. We learned that the paper was
the weakest and the cardboard was the strongest.
In doing this experiment we
determined the importance of having a strong foundation for structures. Also, the importance of structures to be both stable AND strong.
We showed our understanding in our Math books (pg. 100-101).
After physical education we had Math. We reviewed adding by 10’s. For example: 80+8. We discussed what would stay the
same (the number in the ten’s column) and what would change (the number in the
one’s column). We then moved on to adding two-digit numbers by two digit
numbers. For example 60+11: with this question, the number in the one’s column
stays the same because we are adding a number with 0. All we need to so is add
the numbers in the tens column to get the sum.
Here is another example and
strategy:
30+15
We know 30 can be broken up into 3
groups of 10 (10+10+10)
We can then add this to 15
(15+10+10+10)
We showed our understanding in our Math books (pg. 100-101).
We then began working on our good
copies for the recipes that we wrote yesterday.
After second recess and lunch,
students wrote their homework in their agendas and then practiced for the
Christmas concert.
Homework:
1. Read for 20 minutes
2. Math pg. 100-101
3. Year ahead day tomorrow
4. Structure presentation due Friday (these are to be done at home
and ready to present on Friday).
5. Lunch forms due December 16
