Tremendous
Thursday!
What a fun and hard working day we all had in grade 2!!
We first had
French with Mdm. Stella.
We
then learned from Ms. Jaskolka that in Grade 2, we take reading very seriously.
We always want to try and become better readers and we to also be able to
understand what we are reading. We then read Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles
Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees to work on our reading comprehension skills.
In this story,
Gerald really wanted to be able to dance at the Jungle Dance! However, when he
came to the Jungle Dance, all the other animals made him feel very sad because
they said he could not dance. After, he met a cricket who told him that
“sometimes when you’re different you just need a different song” to dance to.
Gerald began to listen to the music in the trees, grass, and moon. The cricket
also began to play his violin. All of a sudden, Gerald began to dance! He was
moving his legs and dancing all over the place! He showed his amazing dance
moves at the Jungle Dance and all the animals were so impressed! We learned
from this story that:
“We all can dance…when
we find music that we love.” We did some deep level grade 2 thinking to figure
out what that means. One of our friends said that it is does not matter who you
are, you should always be yourself. Another friend told us that anyone could do
whatever they want to, no matter what other people say. Another friend said
that we all have things that we are good at. Another important point made was
that we should always be nice to each other.
We then began
working on a reading comprehension package together. We discussed the
characters and the setting of the story.
After, we had Art
with Ms. Kerr.
Following first
recess and lunch, students had physical education with Ms. Lovan.
We then continued
working on our reading comprehension package. We discussed the problem and
lesson learned from the story that we read this morning.
We then made some
text-to-self connections. We wrote about what we worry about and things that we
are good at. We also wrote a sentence about something that we love to do and
believe that we do so well. We then drew a picture of this.
During UOI, we
began learning about structures. We discussed the different shapes used when
building various structures. Students then designed a gingerbread house using
different kinds of shapes.
Following second
recess and lunch, we played a fun math game! We played bingo using skittles!
Ms. Jaskolka called out single digit addition questions and we needed to figure
out the answer. If the answer was one of the numbers on our bingo card, we put
a skittle on it. When we were done, we were able to eat the skittles!
Ms. Jaskolka had a
great day with the “Grade 2’s” today! She is excited to see all of you next
year!
Have a great
night!
