Tremendous Tuesday!
****Parents we need
white board markers for our class. If you could kindly bring some in, that
would be a wonderful help!
**** Picture Day is
Monday October 27 2014 – Please have students come in their full uniform.
This morning we began the day having art with Mr. Monaghan
and physical education with Ms. Lovan.
In math we reviewed near doubles and how we can use near
doubles to help us add. For example:
6+7= ?
6+6 = 12 and 1 more is 13
7+7= 14 and 1 less is 13
so 6+7 is 13
Students then reviewed related facts (fact families)
together.
Afterwards, we went over to Ms. DaCosta’s class and played a
fact family game. Students were each
given a card with a fact family and they needed to find the three other members
of their family.
Ex: 3+4 = 7 needed to find 4+3=7, 7-3=4, 7-4=3

****Math test Tuesday
October 28 2014
During our unit of inquiry, we continued learning about the
media. We began the class listening to riddles and we needed to figure out what
media was being described.
Ex: I am made of large sheets of paper. I have photographs
and lots of words. I tell people the news. What am I?
Answer: A Newspaper
We then learned about the difference between fact and
opinion. A fact is information that
is known or proven to be true. An opinion
is a personal view, which may or may not be based on facts (I think, I believe,
and in my opinion). We then played a trivia game as a class, deciding if a
statement was fact or opinion.
Ex:
An elephant is bigger than a dog – Fact
Everyone should eat ice cream – Opinion (we decided this is an opinion because not everyone likes
ice cream)
Here is a link where students can play at home:
After first lunch and recess, we had French.
When students returned, they wrote their homework in their
agendas and then completed any unfinished work.
During second lunch, we listened to the multiplication song
again; we were multiplying by two.
Afterwards, we read a letter that Ms. Jaskolka wrote and we
reviewed the important parts that we need to make sure to include in a letter.
We then looked at a letter with mistakes and pointed them out; we also
corrected the mistakes.
At the end of the day, we began learning about Word Work
that is part of Daily 5.
We learned that it is important to spell words correctly
when we write, because we care about our writing and the people who will read
it. When we become better spellers, we become better readers and writers.
During word work, students will be working on words that they have trouble
spelling. We will be using different methods to spell words: write it, decorate
the word, build it with magnets and play dough; we will use foam stickers. I
will also see if I can get some sand, so the students can spell the words in
the sand and possibly some individual whiteboards. Creating the words in
various and fun ways will help the students remember how to spell words they
have trouble with.
