This morning we began the day having art with Mr. Monaghan.
Afterwards, we had physical education with Ms. Dacosta and
Ms. Jaskolka. We began with a warm up; we did some laps around the gym.
Afterwards we played a north, south, east, and west game. Before we finished
up, we played duck duck goose.
In our unit of inquiry, we continued our inquiry into the
media. We reviewed what is media and all the different forms:
We went over the purpose of media:
The different techniques used in media:
We also discussed what is media literacy:
We learned that we come across media everyday and that media
tries to express a message to us. So
when we are looking at media, it is important we think about what message is
being expressed to us and that we understand what the message is. If we do not
understand, we can ask questions.
We looked at an advertisement of Toys R Us that has the word
FREE in really big letters. We learned that it is important to read everything that we see in the
advertisement. When we did read it more closely, we saw that we would be able
to get something free after spending 50 dollars.
We can see media
messages. We watched a Marineland commercial and discussed why it made us want
to go there; we went over the techniques posted above.
We can also hear media.
We listened to a Marineland commercial that we would hear on the radio and learned that sound is an important
technique when we cannot see media.
Afterwards, we completed a “signs and symbols” worksheet in
order to remember that media has a message.
We also completed a “media everyday” worksheet, where we
wrote about the different kinds of media that we see and hear everyday.
During math, we used a hundred’s chart to look for patterns
when counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We noticed that when we are going down the
column, the numbers in the ones column stayed the same. We also noticed that
when we went down the column, the numbers increased by ten. We counted by 5’s
starting at 11. We noticed that the final digits alternate 1, 6, 1, 6 and so
on.
We then looked at a hundred’s chart that went from 101-200.
We spoke about the similarities and differences.
Students then completed a page in their Math Makes Sense. We
will continue working on looking for patterns on a hundred’s chart tomorrow.
After first recess and lunch, students had French.
When students returned they wrote their homework in their
agenda’s and completed any unfinished work.
After second recess and lunch, we went over as a class how
to add detail to a sentence. We began with a verb and a noun. We then added an
adjective to describe the noun. To help add detail to our sentence we ask two
of the following questions: How? Where? Why? When? We did examples as a class:
At the end of the day we were working on Daily 5. We went
over how to Read to Someone, and
then we practiced in partners. We made sure to sit EEEK style (elbow, elbow,
knee, knee), have our coaching tips ready when our partner would need help
reading a book, and our checkmarks to remind us of the questions to ask when
our partner is finished reading a page.
