Tremendous Thursday!

Thursday, September 19th is our SJA and Oakwood Welcome Back BBQ, which will take place from 4:00-5:30 PM out in our back recess area. Order forms have been sent home. Please return, along with cash, no later than Friday, September 13th.

A note from Ms. Gandy regarding October lunches. Please ensure you order for your child under the correct grade and teacher.

October Lunches
Site opens tomorrow, September 13th at 7:30am
Site closes Wednesday, September 25th at 3:00pm

Special of the month: 3 pancakes with vanilla cream with an option of syrup for $5.00 OR 1 pancake with vanilla cream with an option of syrup for $2.50 on Fridays.

All payments are to be made through quickbooks.

Our day began with a Terry Fox assembly. Students watched a video that told the story of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. They also sang a Terry Fox song in French. Remember to bring a Toonie for Terry tomorrow.

Then we had Music with Mr. Oliver.

New we practiced our mental math multiplication skills. Then we reviewed divisibility rules from yesterday. After, we looked at newspaper articles and found that numbers are everywhere!!! We looked for exact numbers and estimates. We then had a conversation about when we would use exact numbers and when we would use estimates. We also practiced how to do long division and using the standard algorithm for multiplication. Students then had time to work on textbook questions.

Today students are asked to complete pg. 12 and 13
Questions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 12

Question 1: mental math except division
Question 2: Standard algorithm
Question 3: Mental math including division

After recess and lunch we had French.

Then we moved onto UOI. Students will be using mind mapping as a way to consolidate their notes, organize their thoughts, and study for tests. Our first UOI test will take place on October 2nd. The first mind map is due on September 25th and will represent all students have learned about energy during our first inquiry unit. Today, students received two samples of mind maps. We discussed the format of mind maps and how each person will produce a different map mind. We also watched Hazel Wagner’s Ted Talk about mind mapping. Students have received a checklist that includes all the criteria that need to be considered when working on their energy mind map.

 Action Star!

Manny shared with us how he is able to paint using electricity!

After second recess and lunch we learned about the law of energy conservation: energy cannot be created or destroyed, but is transformed from one form to another.
Students worked in groups and rotated through stations to observe the law of conservation of energy. At each station was a different electrical appliance. Students turned on each of the appliances/tools and observed how each worked. Students listed and described the characteristics which the appliances have in common, what it is the appliances do and what they need in order to do it. Students described examples of energy transformations observed in the appliances.
e.g.
-the fan converts a significant portion of the electrical energy into the kinetic energy

 -flashlight:

Toaster: electrical energy -> mechanical energy (potential energy and kinetic energy)/heat energy/light energy

Success Criteria: I can
  • identify the types of energy observed in each appliance
  •  describe the types of transformations occurring in each appliance, e.g. electrical energy -> heat energy
Recite and understand the Law of Conservation of Energy: energycan neither be creatednor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another
