Tremendous Tuesday!

We began the day have Music with Mr. Oliver.

When we returned, we had a whole class conversation about the importance of completing our homework. Some points we touched on:

-we have one job, to be a student
-our parents have many jobs
-it is important that we are responsible and take our job seriously and do our homework
-next year we will go into MYP, we need to be more independent
-it is important that we have intrinsic motivation (a drive/desire within ourselves to learn more, do well, and to improve)

Then we moved onto Math. First, we took up the homework from last night. Then we did our mental math drills related to multiplication. This week we are given 10 minutes to complete the multiplication table. Next week we will be given less time. We need to continue to practice our multiplication tables so that we can improve.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we continued with math. Today we continued practicing our mental math skills. Here are some strategies we reviewed:

-Look for 10s or the nearest 10
-Add or subtract in a different order
-Separate a number into smaller parts to obtain friendly numbers
53x6
50 x 6= 300
3x6=18
300 + 18 = 318

308 +56 – 6
56-6 = 50
308+50=358

197+452=
197 = 200 – 3
Then 200 = 452= 652 – 3
=649

Using friendly numbers:
197+452
197 is close to 200 so we will use the number 200
197=200-3
Then 200+452=652
Don’t forget the 3!
652-3=649

Some students went up to the white board and showed their thinking when solving mental math problems. Students also worked in groups to answer problems using various mental math strategies. It was wonderful to hear how students had different ways of solving the same problems and teaching their groups members their strategies!

After second recess and lunch, we discussed Listening Note-Taking Skillswith the class.

Students then used these tips provided to take notes while watching a video on the forms of energy.
Students watched the Forms of Energy Videoon YouTube. They made notes on lined paper as they watched focusing on jotting down only the important information.
