Tremendous Tuesday!!!

Our Fall Fundraiser is quickly approaching! What used to be our Spring Fundraiser is now our Fall Fundraiser and we need your help. This year, all funds raised will go towards our Art Productions, physical activity equipment and more Chromebooks. There will be a variety of exciting events and amazing prizes for students to win through their participation. These include sitting in the teacher chair for a day and decorating Mr. Oliver’s face with makeup!! The class who brings in the most money will win a pizza and movie party. For students in Grade 3-6 who bring in a minimum of $40 on top of the daily activities will attend a trip to Glow Zone and those students in JK-Grade 2 will attend a trip to Kidsport. Please complete all forms and send in cash only by tomorrow.

Daily Activities – Each activity costs $2.00!!
Monday, September 23rd is PJ Day.
Tuesday, September 24th is Popcorn Day.
Wednesday, September 25th is Ice Cream Sandwich Day.
Thursday, September 26th is Wacky Thursday.
Friday, September 27th is Casual Day and Dance Party (JK-Grade 2) and Electronics Day and Casual Day (Grade 3-6).

Golf Trip

October 2ndis our first extracurricular activity of the year. We will be heading to The Old Pro Driving RangeThe bus will leave at St. Jude’s Academy at 12:30 pm and return to the school by approximately 3 pm. Students will be required to wear their SJA gym uniform, outdoor shoes, and must dress according to the weather, as this will be an outdoor activity. Permission forms were sent home today and are due back no later than September 20. There is no cost to this activity.

Science Fair

Video for Science Fair: Students are asked to watch these two videos tonight in order to be better prepared to make their own car for science fair.

We began the day with Math. We reviewed the homework from last night and then we moved onto learning about squaring, square numbers and square roots. Surkhab and Manny were our teachers today during math class. First, we reviewed the important terms related to division.

Dividend:the number being divided
49÷7=7

Divisor:The number we divide by

49÷7=7

Quotient:The answer after we divide one number by another

 49÷7=

Then we learned that:

A Square Number is When the quotient is equal to the divisor, the dividend is a square number
49÷7=7

Square:The square of a number is the number times itself. For example, the square of 3 is 3x3. The square of 4 is 4x4.

Squaring: When we multiply a number by itself, we square the number.
Squaring: 7x7 = 49
So 7²=49

Square rootThe square root is just the opposite of the square. You can think of it as the "root" of the square or the number that was used to make the square.

√49 = √ 7²

=7

The square root of a number is a value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the number.

Example: 4 × 4 = 16, so a square root of 16 is 4.

Here is a video to help students gain a better understanding:

Then we did a matching activity where we needed to match the square root to the whole number or the whole number to the squared number.

Great job Manny and Surkhab! We learned so much from you today!

After, we learned about the different parts of a sentence. We reviewed our understanding of: noun, verb, the subject and the predicate of a sentence in order to differentiate between a phrase and a sentence.

We looked over the definition and examples for subject and predicate and then did a mini quiz to check for understanding.

We then read the first three pages of our novel study, City of Ember, and while working in our novel study groups, we picked one word, one phrase and one sentence that we felt was important to this first part of the book. It was really interesting when the students began sharing their word, phrase and sentence with the class because they were all related to the instructions and the mystery box that held the instructions for…… we are not sure yet!!!

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we worked in groups to build a series and parallel circuit to gain the understanding that:

series circuit consists of a single pathway through which electricity can flow. All of the parts of a series circuit—power source, wires, and devices—are connected along the same pathway; the devices are connected one after another, with no branches. Current moves through one device, then the next, and so on.

In a parallel circuit, there is more than one resistor (bulb) and they are arranged on many paths. This means electricity (electrons) can travel from one end of the cell through many branches to the other end of the cell.

All plug sockets on one circuit are parallel connected to on circuit breaker or fuse. All the appliances and plug sockets in a house are parallel connected to the same fuse board. Street lights are parallel connected.

At the end of the day we had physical education.

Homework:

1. Read Daily
2. Math pg. 21 questions 1, 2, 3, and 6 (most finished in class)
3. Finish series and parallel circuit questions (most finished in class)
4. Read chapter 1 of our novel study
5. Watch videos for science fair
6. Bring in a shoe box with recyclable materials to build electric car
7. Golf forms due Sep 20
8. Fall fundraiser forms due tomorrow
9. French test Friday
10. Math test Sep. 30
11. UOI: add today's learning to mind map
