Marvelous Monday!

In the morning, we began with spelling. Students wrote down their spelling words for the week and put them in a duo tang. Students are to keep these duo tangs at home. Every Monday, students will be given list words to study and they will bring them home and put them in their spelling duo tang. Every Friday, we will have a spelling test. In the duo tang are fun ways and strategies to help students learn the spelling words.

After spelling, students had physical education with Ms. Lovan.

When students returned we had UOI. We continued our inquiry into maps and read “There’s a map in my lap” by Tish Robe. Students were able to learn more about the differences between a globe and a map, the lines on the map, which are called longitude and latitude, a compass rose, and how maps can be used for different purposes. Students were also able to figure out that we need maps to be small because if we made everything on the map exactly how big it is, then the map would be too big. Afterwards, students worked on making a compass rose and used it to complete a town map worksheet to help students understand the directions on a map (north, south, east and west). We all decided an easy way to remember the compass rose would be to repeat, “Never eat sour watermelons.”

We then worked on a pre-assessment for our first math unit so that I know where to begin teaching the students. Afterwards, we worked on a sorting activity together. Students decided that the different ways we can sort is by colour, job, shape, size and direction. Then students worked on a sorting activity in their math makes sense workbook.

After first recess and lunch, students had French.

When students returned, students filled out their agenda’s and worked on their homework.

After second recess and lunch, we learned about diagrams. Students were given visuals of a fish, bird and flower and asked to examine what they see. We then worked on a diagram of a park together on chart paper. Afterwards, students began their own diagram in their Ontario Writing workbooks. Students will continue to work on these tomorrow.

At the end of the day, students were given the chance to draw and colour their title page for their IB Binder and Student work portfolio.

We had a very productive day! See you all tomorrow!
