Wonderful Wednesday!

This morning we began with Language Arts. We learned about verbs (action words). We first came up with a list of verbs on the white board and then we played a game of charades. Students picked a verb to act out and they did not use any words. Students had a lot of fun! Here is a video:

After students had physical education with Ms. Lovan.

When students returned we inquired into the country Japan. First we found Japan on our world map. Students were each given information and pictures of one of the five different features of Japan (food, shelter, transportation, leisure, and clothing).

Wahkeen taught us about the transportation in Japan and that it has has one of the fastest trains in the world!!

Food

Teni taught us about the food in Japan. We learned that rice is an important food in in this country and that gohan is the Japanese word for meal.

Leisure (do for fun)

Klara educated us about what people do for fun in Japan (leisure). We learned that origami is an art form in Japan and that in this country they do all sorts of martial arts (ex: Karate and jujitsu).

Shelter

Saanvi let us know about the shelter in Japan. We learned that the houses in Japan can look like houses in Canada but there are two important things we need to remember. In Japan, shoes are not typically worn in the house, they are taken off at the entrance of the home (called the genkan) and slippers are put on instead. Second, at least one room tends to be designed in the Japanese style with tatami floors. Saanvi taught us that tatami are mats that are cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Finally, Dalopo taught us about the clothing in Japan. We focused on the kimono. We learned that kimonos are made from silk, cotton, wool and linen. In everyday life, people in Japan dress in similar ways that we do in Canada, but on special occasions kimonos are often worn.

We learned so many new things about Japan!

In math, we began our unit into Number Relationships. We learned about the different ways that we can group objects. We looked at a big picture of grocery store items and discussed ways we could count the items by grouping. After completing a page in our Math Makes Sense, we sat in a circle and grouped counting cubes by their colour. We then discussed different ways we could group and count the cubes. We continued to stay in a circle and we counted by 2’s. We went around the circle and each student would say what comes next (2, 4, 6, 8….). We counted by 2’s all the way to one hundred!

After first recess and lunch we had French.

When students returned, they wrote their homework in their agenda’s.

After ,we started working on our suitcases that shows what we would pack when travelling to a different country. We used our procedural writing that explained everything that we would pack to help us complete our suitcase.

After second recess and lunch, we read chapter 3 of Flat Stanley and the Japanese Ninja Surprise. As we listened to the story, we paid attention to verbs that we heard and wrote them down. We also learned more about Japan!

Afterwards, we continued working on our caterpillars from Monday. We cut out the circles with the primary and secondary colours and put our caterpillars together.

Homework:

1.     Read for 20 minutes
2.     Fall Fair tomorrow
3.     Bring in 8 pictures of Japan
