Terrific Thursday!

Action Stars!!!!

Teni and Dolapo:

They made up a game called Build it: for one minute, the two girls looked for materials. Then they built a structure using the materiels they found. After they put various objects on them to see how much their structure could hold. If the heaviest object did not make the structure fall, then they sat on their structure.

Great job Teni and Dolapo!

Let me know if you have been learning about structures outside of school J

We began the day playing some house games in the gym. We needed to figure out the names to holiday songs and students were also selected to take part in a holiday game.

Students then had physical education with Ms. Lovan.

During math, we completed a two-digit worksheet. Once we figured out the correct answer for each problem, we were able to figure out a holiday riddle. The question was: What do the elves do after school? Answer: gnome-work (instead of homework). We had a good chuckle out of this.

Afterwards, students used adjectives to describe what they know about reindeers.

Wahkeen cut out ornaments with adjectives, nouns, and verbs on them and then he put them on the correct tree.

When students were finished, they wrote about their pet reindeer (name, where they found their reindeer, where they are kept, what they like to do, what they do not like to do, their favourite food, how they take care of their reindeer, what makes their reindeer special). Then students made their reindeers. Didn’t they turn out fantastic?!?:

After first recess and lunch, students had French.

When the students returned they wrote their homework in their agendas. Students have a Flat Stanley project that they need to complete over the holidays. Feel free to email me with any questions. I also created math packages that the students can work on over the holidays; this is optional.

Students then completed a holiday crossword and word search.

At the end of the day, we had hot chocolate with marshmallows, popcorn (thank you to Saanvi), and cupcakes (thank you to Wahkeen) and watched some movies. We began watching a movie about Rudolph and then moved on to a movie about the Grinch.

What a great way to end off!!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and a fantastic start to the new year!!

To my students: I have greatly enjoyed teaching you these last three months. You are all such delightful and special students; I look forward to teaching all of you in the new year!!

Ms. Jaskolka

Homework:

1.     Read for 20 minutes every night:this is important to help students build upon their reading and comprehension skills. When reading, students can:
-use the Daily 5 strategy: Read the pictures, read the words, and then retell the story
-when retelling the story, the students use the pictures and what they remember happened
-retell the story without using the book ensuring to use their own words and putting the events and details in order
-First, Next, Then, Last

-discuss your favourite part or character and explaining why: students make sure that you use evidence from the book to explain your reasoning
-Think about the author’s message: Why do you think the author wrote the book you are reading? Is the author trying to teach you about something important?
2.    Flat Stanley Project: a letter was sent home explaining this assignment

3.    Math holiday package: optional

Wonderful Wednesday!!

Here are the ornaments we made yesterday. We put glitter paint into them and swirled around the paint:

We began the day telling a silly holiday story to our friends using adjectives! Wahkeen told us about Santa and used adjectives to describe his hat, suit, beard, and boots. Here we are:

We then discussed what stability means:

Afterwards, we watched a video about stability:

We watched another video that taught us how we know a structure is stable. We were given an example of a bridge and the importance of trusses that keeps the bridge balanced and therefore able to carry a heavy load:

After going through a powerpoint about the strength and stability of a structure, Strong and stable structures, we again defined stability as well as strength. This is what we have learned:

We were then off to the gym to practice for the Christmas concert. We did an excellent job being loud and evil villains!

After first recess and lunch, we played a doubles plus one game with skittles! We played this game with a partner. We rolled the dice and we would double the amount on the dice and then add 1 (3+3+1=7). We put a skittle if we got the answer.
Here we are having fun with math!:

After second recess and lunch, we finished playing our game and then we created our own gingerbread boy or girl, house, and discussed what we would run away from if we were a gingerbread boy or girl. Here they are:

Homework:

1. Read for 20 minutes
2. Sign rubrics (Teni)
3. Christmas concert tonight
