Tremendous Thursday!!

We began our day writing our spelling test.

Next we had French and then Gym.

After first recess and lunch we worked on number pattern activities in groups. In one group, we were given table chart and we needed to figure out the number of tiles used in each number pattern. We used our mental math skills and square tiles to help figure out the answer. During the second activity, we were given a word problem and we problem solved in our group how to solve the problem using number patterns. During the final activity, we used the tablets to answer problems related to number patterns. We had so much fun!!!!

Next we continued sharing about our March Break.

Nyla also shared a video of incredible action she did over the March Break. She collected some food and made some kind letters and delivered them to people in need in Toronto. Check out the video!

After second recess and lunch we completed a materials activity in groups. We looked at various objects and we determined the material they are made of. We have become material experts!!!

At the end of the day we had free time!!!

Have a wonderful long weekend!!

Wednesday March 28, 2018

Wonderful Wednesday!!!

We began the day writing a journal entry about our March break ensuring to use proper writing conventions.

Next we had French and then Gym.

After first recess and lunch we had Music.

Next we continued learning about number patterns during math class. Ms. Jaskolka faced us with a question: Ms. Jaskolka walks 3 blocks every day. How many blocks will she walk in 4 days? After 8 days?

We determined that the pattern rule was adding 3 to each day. We made a t-chart to determine that Ms. Jaskolka would walk 12 blocks in 4 days and 24 blocks in 8 days.

We then looked at another question as a class. Mr. Nahi was putting out chairs. He put out 5 chairs each day. How many chairs would he put out in 3 days? In 6 days?

We were quick to figure out the pattern rule: add 5 chairs each day

Next we had a trickier question but we were up for the task! Ms. Jaskolka collected pennies. She collected 3 pennies per day. On Day 2 she collected 6. On day 4 she collected 24. How many did she collect in 3 days? In 5 days? We figured out that the pattern rule involved multiplication! Pattern rule: Multiply the number of pennies by 2.

We then worked on some number pattern questions independently.

After second recess and lunch we talked more about structure. We looked at pictures of frames and we were challenged to figure out the structure associated with the frame. We learned how the structural frame of a structure is really important to help a structure stand and stay strong.

Next we sang Happy Birthday to Nathan and Justin who both celebrated birthdays over the March break!

At the end of the day, we continued to share about our amazing March breaks!!!

Homework:

1.     Read for 20 minutes
2.     Permission form Due Tuesday

Tuesday March 27, 2018

Tremendous Tuesday!!!

We began the day finishing our novel study: Horrible Harry and the Holidaze. We then discussed our favourite part in the story and explained why we chose the specific event.

Next we had more time to talk about our marvelous march breaks!

After we had French and then Gym.

After first recess and lunch we dove into our new math unit about number patterns. We looked at numbers on the white board and we determined the number pattern. We first determined the number that we began with and then if we are adding or subtracting or multiplying to determine the number pattern. We used a hundred’s chart to help us. Then, we worked in partners on a number pattern activity. We  rolled a dice and used this number as our number pattern. We then rolled the dice and began with this number. Next we determined the next 5 numbers that would come in our pattern.

After second recess and lunch we wrote about what we learned during our Simple Machines unit. Then we began our new unit about Structures. Before beginning this unit, Ms. Jaskolka gave us a challenge. We pretended that we were working at a store and we needed to organize the objects Ms. Jaskolka gave us onto four shelves. This was a tricky task but we were up for it!!!! We figured out that the items were made of different materials. We then had a conversation about the importance of the materials that structures are made of because if a building was made using paper, for example, it would fall down!!!! During this unit we will explore the materials that structures are made of that allow them to be stable and strong.
