Our next extra-curricular activity is skiing/snowboarding at Glen Eden Ski Resort. Our next trip is Wednesday, March 4. Please do not order lunch for these days; it will not be saved nor will a reimbursement be given. We will be leaving at 7:00 AM and returning by 4:00 PM at the latest. All rentals are included, however students are more than welcome to bring their own. Please do not order hot lunch for these days as we will be eating lunch at the ski hill – students are welcome to bring money to purchase food and drink items. Students must ensure they are dressed in appropriate ski gear; warm socks, long johns with comfy clothes, snow pants, warm mitts, a face protector (if possible) and a ski jacket. Please note that if students chose skiing, they will ski all three times. If students pick snowboarding, they will snowboard all three times. All students will have to pass each level before they are granted permission to ski on the big hill, no matter what their experience.

March Break Camps

Forms have been sent home regarding SJA’s awesome Adventure Camp. The wonderful camp will run from Monday to Friday both weeks of the March Break (March 9-13 & March 16-20) and is offered to student from JK to Grade 6. Field trips will take place on Thursday afternoons. Meal plans are also included if you chose to do so. Cash or QuickBooks payments only please. Don’t delay; register today! Contact Ms. Hughes at bsmith@stjudesacademy.com for any questions.

We began the day with music.

Then we wrote our UOI test on Canada's connections to the world.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we began working either on the math review or the probability summative.

At the end of the day we participated in Jump Rope for Heart.

Please check our Mr. Conte's and Mrs. Haag's class for more pictures:

PEPS

I can define PEPS as follows …
·      Physical: refers to the physical landscape of the earth.
·      Economic: refers to forms of trade, work, or any money related activities.
·      Political: refers to government activities, laws, or any symbols related to these ideas.

·      Social: refers to people and the cultures, beliefs, and traditions that define them.

We began the day with math.

Learning Goals: to apply my understanding of experimental and theoretical probability.

We  went through some examples as a class to ensure we understand how to make a tree diagram and answer probability related questions.

Students then completed questions in their textbook.

Success Criteria:
I understand
-when probability is expressed as a percent, the word “chance” is used
-the probability of an impossible outcome is 0. The probability of an outcomes that is certain is 1.

The rest of the day was spent working on our country brochure as well as in French class and physical education class.

For our brochure we focused on the offerings and needs and WHY the HDI is so low in our country based on the three areas (life expectancy, knowledge and standard of living) and then using this to better understand the specific goods or services that our country needs to ask for in order to improve the HDI ranking in our chosen country.

Homework and Reminders:

1. Read Daily
2. Brochure due tomorrow (most was finished in class)
3. UOI test tomorrow
4. Math pg. 422-423 Questions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 (most students finished in class)
5. Jump rope for heart event tomorrow

We began the day with anti-bullying day activities.

Then we had Music.

When we returned we did some questions as a class to ensure we understand experimental and theoretical probability. Sethumi and some other students did an experiment where they rolled the dice 100 times. We first figured out the theoretical probability was about 16.7 percent or 17 percent (when rounded to the nearest whole number) for the probability of each number coming up. The students then did the experiment 100 times and using this information we found the relative frequency for each number coming up. We figured out the fraction, percent and decimal for each one. We also ensured that our decimals added up to 1 whole and each percent added up to 100.

We did another example with a coin to ensure we understand theoretical and experimental probability. To sum up: theoretical probability is the likelihood of an event occurring and experimental probability are the results that we get after doing the actual experiment.

Learning Goals: explore and apply theoretical probability

Students then moved onto textbook questions.

Success Criteria:

-I understand that: theoretical probability is when the outcome of an experiment are equally likely, the probability of any outcome is the ratio of the number of outcomes of favourable outcomes to the number of possible outcomes
-theoretical probability is found by analyzing the possible outcomes
-the more times an experiment is conducted, the closer the experimental probability is to the theoretical probability
I can:
-find the theoretical probability based on information given
-I can use long or short division to find the theoretical probability
After first recess and lunch we had French.

Next we did more practice with experimental and theoretical probability.

The rest of the day was spent working on our brochure on the developing country we chose for our summative project.

Homework:

1. Read Daily
2. Math pg. 418-9 Questions 1, 2, and 4
3. UOI - 3 sections of brochure complete

A note from Ms. Gandy regarding March hot lunch orders
The lunch site is now open and will close Wednesday, February 26th at 3:00 PM sharp.

Special of the month: French Toast with Whipped Cream and Syrup

Caribou Math Contest
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, February 26. Students are to arrive at 7:15 AM for a 7:30  start. They should bring their own charged devices. The interactive question for Grades 2-10 will be Bomb Defuser and for Grade 11/12 it will be GeomeTree requiring a construction involving lines and circles. Because Caribou’s GeomeTree site can be used to solve the interactive question, this site will be blocked at noon on Tuesday, February 25th. Both interactive questions are accessible from Caribou’s Games/History page.

We began the day with our pancake eating contest!

 Then we had math.

Learning Goals: determine probability from experiments

We did some examples as a class to check for understanding.

A reminder: when finding the relative frequency, when doing long division, the denominator (total amount) goes on the outside and the numerator (number of times an outcome occurs) goes on the inside; dividing the denominator into the numerator to find the relative frequency.

Success Criteria:

I understand that:

-Relative frequency is the number of times an outcome occurs divided by the total number of times the experiment is conducted
-Relative frequency may be written as a fraction, a decimal or percent
- Relative frequency is also called experimental probability
-The sum of the relative frequencies for an experiment is 1

The rest of the day was spent working on our UOI summative as well as in French class and physical education.

Homework and Reminders:

1. Read Daily
2. Math pg. 411-412 Q. 1 and 2
3. UOI - finish research, offerings and needs
4. Caribou Math tomorrow
5. Pink shirt day tomorrow
6. French homework on adjectives
