Fantastic Friday!

Next week is Spirit Week! YAY! What a fun way to end off before March break!!!!! Here are some exciting events coming up!

1.     Monday is PJ day
2.     Tuesday is colourful clothing and crazy hair day
3.     Wednesday is Super Hero and Princess Day
4.     Thursday is House Colours Day
5.     Friday is St. Patrick’s Day Spirit Day Dress up

We began the day having French with Mlle. Jessica.

We then wrote our spelling test and had gym.

When students returned, we continued learning about addition with two digit numbers using a place value mat. We worked together to add 26 and 25.
26: is 2 tens and 6 ones
25: is 2 tens and 5 ones.
One student came up to the white board and showed us how to model 26 on a place value mat. We had another friend add 25 to our place value mat. We noticed that in the ones column a whole ten frame was covered up so we could bring it over to the tens column.  Using the place value mat will help us better understand using the standard algorithm and why we need to carry over a number into the tens column.

We then moved onto another question:
The grade 2’s put on a show. They had blue tickets for kids and yellow tickets for adults. They gave out 28 blue tickets and 37 yellow. How many people came to the show?
We determined that we have 15 ones so we need to make a group of ten and add it to the ten’s column (there are two columns on a place value mat – one for 1’s and one for 10’s). When we have 10 one’s we trade them for 1 ten stick; we need to ensure to cross out the 1’s that we used to make the ten stick and also that we add one more ten stick to the 10’s column.

Students showed their understanding in their math books, answering similar questions on their own.

Following first recess and lunch we continued with our math.

We then worked on the front page of our IB binders, drawing ourselves in grade 2.

After we read the last Chapter of Horrid Harry and the Holidaze. It was a very exciting chapter because the students in the story did a Secret Santa activity while learning about Christmas which was similar to our colourful friends activity!!!

Following second recess and lunch, we were invited into the JK classrooms to learn about their transportation unit and the specific forms of transportation that they made for their summative projects. Great job JK’s!!!!

We then had some sharing time.
