Tremendous Thursday!

We began the day having gym with Ms. Lovan.

After, we learned about adding and subtracting two digit numbers.

When adding and subtracting, we need to make sure to begin with the ones column.

When adding, if the sum of the numbers in the ones column equal 9 or more, we need to make sure to carry over.

 1

  19
+ 13
________
  32

Subtraction:

When subtracting we need to keep in mind that sometimes we may need to borrow from the neighbour next door:

   24
- 19
________[we cannot take 9 away from 4 so we need to borrow from the tens column]
  24 (the 2 represents 20)
- 19 (the 1 represents 10)
______

  24
- 19
_____

First we need to borrow 10 from the 20 and give it to the 4.
20-10=10

We then give the 10 to the 4: 10 +4 =14

We can now subtract 14 from 9 and that gives us 5.

  24
- 19
_______
     5

Since we borrowed 10 from the 20, the 2 now becomes a 1.

 14
-19
_____
  05

Here is another strategy:

Students were given an addition and subtraction package to practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. It is important that students understand how to do so for our current math unit. We spent an hour and a half on math today to ensure students had enough time to understand and complete their work.

After first recess and lunch, we continued working on our addition and subtraction package.

Then we watched a Bill Nye the Science Guy video about Architecture. Afterwards, we discussed the important points from the video. We talked about the different materials that buildings can be made of and how structures need a strong base so they will not fall down. We also discussed how architects ask many questions when the begin planning such as: what will the structure be used for? Will it be a home? An Office building?
We will continue watching this video tomorrow. Students can also watch this video at home:
