Tremendous Tuesday!

We began the day with Math. Today we reviewed how to calculate the mean, median, mode and range when given a set of numbers.
3, 5, 8, 2, 1
First, we learned the importance of arranging the numbers from smallest to largest:
1, 2, 3, 5, 8
To find the mean: add all the number together and then divide by the total numbers
1+2+3+5+8=19  19 divided by 2 is 8.5
The median is the middle number of your data set when in order from least to greatest.
1, 2, 3, 5, 8

When given an even number of date student should find the mean of the two middle numbers. For example, if the two middle numbers are 7 and 11, the median is 7+11 divided by 2 which is 9. When given an odd number of data the median is the middle number.

The mode is the number that occurred the most often.
This set of data has no mode.
The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values.
8-1=7
Here are more examples:

Next we played a game with a partner where we worked on calculating the mean, median, mode and range of a given set of numbers.

Next we had French.

After first recess and lunch we explored electricity circuits using trouble shooting strategies to turn on light bulbs. Students were given wires, 6V batteries, light bulbs and holders, switches and the ‘Light Up the Class’ worksheet.
We ensured to discuss safety precautions.
SAFETY CAUTION! when a wire is connected directly from on terminal of the battery/cell to the other terminal of the battery. As there is not bulb (resistor) between the terminals, electric current can flow unimpeded. The wire will get hot and could melt the insulation.
The worksheet challenged students to use the electric components to build various circuits in groups. Students drew pictures of each circuit that successfully met each challenge. Students then used this knowledge to identify correctly constructed electric circuits. Students also read about and added Thomas Edison to their Electric Timeline.

Next, we talked about idioms. The Grade 6 class continues to blow Ms. Jaskolka away with their knowledge. Students were able to determine that idioms are old sayings that give advice or help people with living their life. We learning that idioms are wise sayings that offer advice about how to live and also transfer some underlying ideas, principles and values of a given culture / society. We also discussed that idioms have a "figurative meaning" meaning, they basically work with "pictures".

Our idiom for today: A hot potato
Students are asked to inquire about what this idiom means. I look forward to our discussion tomorrow!

Next, we learned aboutsimiles: a simile is an expression that describes a person, place, or thing by comparing it to something else. It is done using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ to help make the comparison. We went over some examples as a class an then we made our own similes. We will use our knowledge of similes to write more creatively.

After second recess and lunch we had gym.

Homework:
