Fantastic Friday!

In the morning, the whole school took part in a house game. Students were chosen from different grades and houses to compete in a three-legged race.  Students were up on their feet, cheering on their housemates. This was an exciting way to end spirit week.

Then students had art with Mr. Monaghan and Gym with Ms. Lovan.

Afterwards, we continued our inquiry into communities during UOI.  We first read a book about all the things we would see in communities around the world and we made a list on chart paper. Then each student was given a book to look over about communities in cities, suburbs, small towns and farms. Students were able to recognize that while certain features may look different in each community, they are most often found in each one, such as homes and places to get food. After we watched short clips of a boy and girl from China and a boy from Kenya. From these video clips, we learned how people in other countries have different lifestyles. For example, the children in all the video clips needed to wake up early because they needed to walk 30min – 1 hour to get to school. We noticed they had different houses and ate different food.

Afterwards, students worked on a fun back to school math package. Students were using their addition skills to figure out secret codes. I was happy to see how excited the students were to complete each code and any spare moment they had during the day, they took their own initiative to continue working on the package.

After first recess and lunch, students had French with Mme. Stella.

When students returned, they wrote down their homework in their agendas.

Afterwards we continued our UOI unit. Students began to learn about maps and in doing so they will better understand why communities around the world can be different from our own (countries near the equator are warmer and therefore different food is grown and clothing is not the same). We looked at mapping books and students learned that when creating a map, it is important to have a title, legend, and to use different colours so that each symbol on the map can be understood.

Before going home, students were given a special treat for having such a great week in my class!

See you all next week!
