Fantastic First Day of School!

We had a wonderful first day of school. At the beginning of the day, students had art with Mr. Monaghan and then gym with Ms. Lovan.

Afterwards, the students and I organized all of the supplies that were brought in. The students helped me decide where everything should go using excellent problem solving skills. It was wonderful to see how the students were helping one another.

Then we read the book “First Day Jitters” by Julie Danneberg and discussed how teachers as well as students can feel nervous on the first day of school.

We went on to make an agreement about the important rules we want to have in the classroom so that everyone can learn and feel welcome. The students came up with excellent ideas!

We then went over the learner profiles and attitudes. For September, the learner profile is to be an inquirer (develop natural curiosity, independent learner, actively enjoys learning) and the attitude is to be curious (being inquiring about the nature of learning and of the world, its people and cultures).

Afterwards, we discussed what a second grader would need in their backpack in order to be successful. Some examples included a good sleep, a lunch box, and an agenda to keep organized.  Students then proceeded to make their own list about what they think will help them be successful in grade two and created their own backpacks.

After second recess and lunch, students had French with Madame Stella.

After French, students continued to work on their backpacks.

When students were finished, we did some community building playing the game “Would you Rather.” We sat in a circle and each student picked a card and read it out loud. Students were given two options and they needed to choose one and explain why. An example: Would you rather be in a large room with a lion or a small room with 70 snakes? We had a lot of fun!

I want to thank all the students for such a fabulous first day! It was heart warming to see how helpful the students were to me, each other, and particularly how welcoming the students were of their new classmates.

See you all tomorrow!
