Magnificent Monday!!!

We began the day working on our lesson 8 spelling words.

We then had French and then Gym.

After first recess and lunch, we learned how to estimate the sum and difference by using front-end estimation and rounding.

With front end estimation, we only round and add the numbers in the leftmost place or the very last number on the left.

Instead of rounding each number to a given place value, we round whatever number is in the front.  Front-end estimation is just one way of estimating an answer. You will need to round the number so that there is one digit in the front and all others become zeros. Then you are ready to complete any operations that may be asked.
164 + 690 can be approximated by 200 + 700 = 900

Note that with front end estimation, all other numbers except the leftmost digits (2 and 7) are equal to zero and we only added the leftmost digits as stated before

We also learned how to use rounding to the nearest ten and hundred to make our estimates:
Tenth:
255+181= 260+180=440
Hundred:
255+181= 300+200=500
We then began working on our math review.

After second recess and lunch we reviewed push and pull factors and some examples. We then explored a fire that happened in Fort McMurray in 2016. While this happened in Canada this is a similar situation that many children and families are faced withKimberly Brown, Ian Norman and Quinn van Driesums pose with the items they took from their Fort McMurray homes before evacuating. to find safety on a daily basis.
Here is an article that we read as a class.

We realized that if we needed to leave our home forever because of an emergency situation, it is important to grab items that are most special to us. One child wanted to take a blanket that he could share with his baby sister. Another child wanted to bring her stuffed dog as a reminder of a pet dog that she used to have.
Next we pretended that we only had 5 minutes to pack a suitcase due to an emergency situation; Ms. Jaskolka was counting down the time. This was a very difficult and tricky process because there were so many things we wanted to take!!! When the five minutes were up, Ms. Jaskolka let us know that often times people migrating don’t have big suitcases but grab only what they can carry. So we needed to look back at our list and pick only four items that we could carry and explained why. We were very reflective throughout this whole process.

Homework:
1.     Read for 20 minutes
2.     Spelling
3.     Cursive
4.     Math Review

5.     Math test Thursday
