Thursday January 25, 2018

Tremendous Thursday!!!!

We began the day writing in our agendas and the completing an activity related to Three King’s Day. We learned about this holiday from Horrible Harry and the Holidaze yesterday during our novel study.

We then discussed our summative project. We are going to create our own holiday!!!!! We are so excited about this!!! We will create our own holiday and an accompanying scrapbook!!! To help us we looked at silly but real holidays that exist in January such as National Spaghetti Day, Cuddle up Day and even ….

Next we had French and then Gym.

After first recess and lunch we had Music.

Next we continued learning about how to make change.  We did an example as a class:

We learned that we should break down the amount that we have into loonies.
For example: if we have 10 dollars we should break it apart into 10 loonies; if we have 5 dollars we should break it apart into 5 loonies; if we have 10 dollars we should break it apart into 10 loonies.

IF we have a problem like: I have 5 dollars and the ball costs 2 dollars how much change would I get? We would just do 5-2 which would be 3 dollars.

However, if we have a problem like: I have 5 dollars and the ball costs 2.35 we have a few more steps to do.

So first we would break the 5 dollars into 5 loonies.

Next, we would cross out one loonie and trade it in for: 8 dimes, 3 nickels, and 5 pennies. This will be our rule: anytime we trade one loonie this is what we will always do to get the hang of making change.

So, now we have 4 loonies, 8 dimes, 3 nickels and 5 pennies.

NOW we can cross out 2 loonies (our ball costs 2.35) and then cross out 3 dimes and 1 nickel and then we are left with 2 loonies and 65 cents!

We will practice more tomorrow.

After second recess and lunch we wrote a journal entry about our favourite holiday ensuring to use proper writing conventions.

At the end of the day we had some free time since we have been working so hard!!!!

Homework:

1.     Read for 20 minutes
2.     Spelling test tomorrow

3.     Food drive tomorrow
