Fantastic Friday!

We began our new unit today, Canada and the world and our focus was to describe the connections that they as individuals have to the rest of the world and what it means to be a global citizen. We played Globingo to better understand how we are all connected to the rest of the world! Student filled out as many squares as possible by obtaining information from other students. The name of the country and the name of the student were noted in the appropriate square. The first student to fill out all the boxes called out “Globingo”!

Following Globingo we talked about what students learned about their classmates. We then looked to the “Canada and the World” map in the classroom. For every country on our sheets, we put a pin on our world map.

Here are all the countries we found that we are connected with just in our classroom!!!!

We learned that as global citizen its important to know about Canada’s connections to other countries in the world and today they have taken the first step to becoming active global citizens.
For homework, students will be creating an inventory of products, goods and other things in their homes that come from other countries.

Students are also asked to complete lesson one on the Oxfam website: https://www.oxfamblogs.org/education/mapping_our_world/mapping_our_world/l/lesson1/index.htm

In doing so, students will gain a better understanding of maps, globes, countries around the world and viewing the world from different perspectives. Students will explore:

What does the globe look like? What's the relationship between a map and a globe? And how do the shapes of continents change when you flatten a globe into a map.

What does the Earth look like from space? How much detail can you see? And can you see everything on Earth at once? Look at our planet from an alien's point of view.

If a mole dug right through the centre of the Earth, where would it end up? What does the 'other side' of the Earth look like? And can you predict what's opposite where?

Then we had French.

After we had a snack and headed off to the speech competition! Ms. Jaskolka is so proud of all the participants!!!!!

Here are our top three students from Grade 6. Way to go!!!!

After we had lunch.

Then we reflected on an activity we worked our hardest on, best on, and an activity we would like to improve on and placed them in our IB binders.

Students also were introduced to the next step for our art project, which is drawing and colouring a viking boat. We are asked to draw a viking boat only 10cm long and we are asked to be as accurate as possible. Students are asked not to draw the sail. Students are asked to colour in the viking ship using pencil crayons.
