Fantastic Friday!

We began the day with Math. We reviewed our homework from last night and then moved on to applying our knowledge of mean, median and mode to specific situations.

Mean - When people say "average" they usually are talking about the mean. You can figure out the mean by adding up all the numbers in the data and then dividing by the number of numbers. For example, if you have 12 numbers, you add them up and divide by 12. This would give you the mean of the data.

Median - The median is the middle number of the data set. It is exactly like it sounds. To figure out the median you put all the numbers in order (highest to lowest or lowest to highest) and then pick the middle number. If there is an odd number of data points, then you will have just one middle number. If there is an even number of data points, then you need to pick the two middle numbers, add them together, and divide by two. That number will be your median.

Mode - The mode is the number that appears the most.
Mode is most easily understandable and quickly visible. Many decisions in day-to-day life is taken on modal concept. Like, going to watch a movie where most people are going. Or choosing colour of car as the one most people are buying.

We worked on some examples as a class and then began our homework about calculating and determining the mean, median and mode in specific situations.

Next we worked on our speeches. Today we decided which reasons out of our five were strongest to include in our speech and we researched more about each reason.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we reviewed our understanding of Asian, Polynesian and Irish explorers and then we dove into learning about the Vikings. We will continue learning more about the Vikings on Monday. Some key learning:

-       Origins of Vikings (Scandinavia, Norway)
-       Viking way of life
-       Settlement of Iceland and Greenland
-       Sagas
-       Success of Viking boatbuilding technology, longboats and sails, navigating without a compass – using stars and environment (type of sea life), etc.
-       Vinland
-       Important Viking sailors Bjarni Herjolfsson,  Eirik the Red, and Leif the Lucky, Thorfinn Karlsefni
-       Archeological evidence at L’Anse Meadows in NFL and how this is similar to digs in Greenland
