We began the day finishing up our Math Review on Data Management.

Then we moved onto researching for our third reason paragraph. We researched more information on the three examples we have chosen to support our third reason.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then, we dove into the period before the age of exploration to see what was happening in Europe and Asia before the age of exploration and how this enticed many explorers to leave their homelands to find new trading routes to Asia.

We reviewed how trade occurred before the age of exploration. We discussed how goods came from Asia, along the silk road, to Baghdad, which was the trading centre before the age of exploration. Items such as silk and spices were then brought to Genoa and Venice. European traders and merchants would also bring items to Genoa and Venice. These items were then sent along the west coast of Europe, by land and river routes of Europe, Africa, and Persia. By the 1400s these trade routes were flourishing. By 1453, the Ottoman empire captured the trading centre at Constantinople and as a result placed high taxes on goods from China and India. So now Europeans are looking for other ways to reach Asia; one solution, using water instead of land!!! We learned about Vasco da Gama who did just that in 1498! He was able to reach India by sea! We also talked about Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailor who sailed on behalf of Spain looking for India but instead ended up at Central and South America.
