Tremendous Thursday!

Mr. Foster’s Farmers Market and Ms. Gandy’s Groceries

As part of their summative assessment the grade one classes have decided to open a market to complement their organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 12 and 18. The market will take place all day Thursday, January 23rd and Friday, January 24th. All profits made will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

We began the day having music class with Mr. Oliver.

Then we worked on our RSA Animate. Students first did a rough draft and then recorded their project afterwards. One student recorded while the other student drew doodles related to their 10 facts about their chosen explorer. Students then sped up the video. Tomorrow students will use their script to do the voice over.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

During Math, we reviewed how to measure the area for a parallelogram.

We then began another project related to our current UOI. We are making viking art!! Today we focused on making a sunset using oil pastels.

After second recess and lunch we worked on our speeches. Today we worked on writing a counter-argument.

When you counter-argue, you consider a possible argument against your speech topic or some aspect of your reasoning. It can be a persuasive and (in both senses of the word) disarming tactic. It allows you to anticipate doubts and pre-empt objections that a skeptical reader might have; it presents you as the kind of person who weighs alternatives before arguing for one, who confronts difficulties instead of sweeping them under the rug, who is more interested in discovering the truth than winning a point.

Two examples are given in the speech duo-tang. One about blow dryers and one about sharks. We read them and reviewed them as a class so students understand how to write a counter-argument. We then wrote our own counter-argument.

Homework:

1. Read Daily
2. Math pg. 219-220
1, 2, 4, 6, 8
3. Speech - counter-argument
4. UOI- check over scipt
