Welcome back everyone!!!

We began the day talking about all the fun and exciting activities that we did over the holidays!

During math class we learned about stem and leaf plots. Students examined the data showing science test scores in their text books. We were asked: Which test scores appear most often? (75 and 81). How do you know? (I counted how many times each score appeared.) We learned that the same data has been displayed on a stem and leaf plot. A stem and leaf plot is a way to organize data in numerical order.

Ms. Jaskolka modeled how to draw the plot with a ruler, how to order the numbers, and how to write each number as a tens digit and a ones digit. We were asked: How does writing the data like this help you find the mode? (I can count how many times the same digit is repeated in each row of leaves.) What can you see in the stem and leaf plot that you cannot see in the chart? (I can easily find the medium, mode, and range of the data. I can see how many students scored in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s. I can see the highest mark and the lowest mark.) We then worked on some questions related to stem and leaf plots and calculating the mean, median and mode for the data provided.

Next we began talking about the speech competition. A letter and a package went home discussing all the specifics with regards to the expectations for the oral competition. We first watched a speech by Oprah Winfrey and we are very moved by this speech and so we discussed how she was able to move us with her words. We read an article to better understand the devices that she used during her speech. First, she employs the use of literary devises to emphasize the point she is trying to make.

Tricolon:
three phrases of the same basic length.
“it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them and also with the incredible men and women who have inspired mewho challenged mewho sustained me and made my journey to this stage possible.”

  • "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."(attributed to Benjamin Franklin, among others)

antimetabole has two inverted phrases (A B; B A). That’s the formula.

JFK said, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

epistropherepetition at the end of phrases.
“They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers.”

She contrasts that immediately with some anaphora, repetition at the beginning of phrases.  “They are working in factories and they work in restaurants…”

She shifts into some enumueratio (listing topics) and polysyndeton (adding extra conjunctions to a phrase).  “They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business,” says Winfrey.

Most importantly, we learned that her speech was so powerful because it was well timed; her topic about empowering women and girls is relevant today and many people can relate to her speech.

We then looked at another example of a speech and then possible topics we could choose. Next, we started brainstorming possible topics for our own speech. Topics are due tomorrow.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

Then we dove into UOI. Today we investigated timelines and how to create a proper timeline. We will be making our own timelines as we explore the past and try and uncover who discovered America.
