Terrific Thursday!

We began the day having French with Mdm. Stella.

When students returned, they wrote their homework in heir agendas and then we reviewed the summative project for our current UOI unit.

UOI Project:
Students will be building their own bridge using materials of their choice. Students will be building their bridge at school. Before building, students will be planning/brainstorming all of their ideas. We will begin this process on Friday. Students will then take home these packages and have them completed for Wednesday. Students are also required to bring in their materials by Wednesday. Materials are to be brought in a bag labeled with the student’s name. An outline went home today in each agenda.

Students then had Art with Ms. Kerr.

Following first recess and lunch, students had physical education.

When students returned, we dove into Math. We discussed various ways that we can determine if we need to add or subtract when solving word problems. When adding, we look out for key words like in all, all together, on both days, in total. When subtracting, we look out for key words like how many more, how many were left, fewer, how much money did he/she spend. When adding, we are looking for the total number of something. When subtracting, we already know the total number and we are trying to figure out a part of something. We did various questions to review adding and subtracting word problems.
Example: There are 30 birds on a fence. There are 30 birds on a tree. How many birds are there in total? Addition

There are 60 birds in the yard. Some are on a fence. 30 are on a tree. How many birds are on the fence? Subtraction

In language, we continued learning how to write a proper paragraph that explains about a certain topic. Yesterday we began learning about writing a topic sentence. Today we wrote two detailed sentence for a given topic. Tomorrow we will write three.

After second recess and lunch, we continued working on our detailed sentences. When we were finished, we completed an activity where we discussed how we have been risk takers; Risk Taker is the learner profile for the month.

4.     Math test next Wednesday
5.     Science Centre Forms due Jan. 15

6.     UOI: bring in materials for Wednesday
