Marvelous Monday!!

***Today letters were sent home explaining the poetry contest we will be having on February 26. Each student was given a poem that they are going to be memorizing. In the letter that was sent home, there is a schedule that we will be following at school and that the students will also be following at home. On the second page, students will be marked based on every completed task indicated for the required date. Please look over the letter, sign, and bring it back with your child tomorrow.

We began the day having art with Mr. Monaghan and physical education with Ms. Lovan.

When students returned, they wrote their test for Exploring Addition and Subtraction.
Wahkeen worked on counting small amounts of coins.

We then began our new UOI unit about Simple Machines! We completed a KWL chart. We wrote what we know about Simple Machines and what we want to learn about. After, we watched a video and discussed the 6 Simple Machines: wheel, screw, inclined plane, lever, wedge, and pulley. Here is the video; students can watch this video again to better understand what simple machines are. Simple machines help make work easier.

After first recess and lunch we had French.

When students returned we wrote our homework in our agendas and then discussed what we have been learning about Nigeria. We then read a book with Ms. Jaskolka to learn more about Nigeria. Here is what we learned: Nigeria is called the Giant of Africa because of its size and population. We also read that Nigeria got its name from the Niger River that runs through Nigeria; the Niger River is one of the longest rivers in the world. We also learned that it gets really hot and dry in the summer, which causes a draught. We found out that we get Cocao beans from Nigeria, which are used to make chocolate!!

After second recess and lunch, we wrote out our lesson 15 spelling words and worked in our Spelling books.

At the end of the day, we reviewed the I-chart for Read to Self. We know that during Daily 5 Read to Self, we need to sit in one spot, be very quiet, read books that are at our level, read the book in 3 ways, and that we should do our best to build stamina. Doing so, we will become much better readers!!

Homework:

1.     Read for 20 minutes
2.     Read over International Day information
3.     Sign poetry letter and read over poem

4.     Spelling pg. 62-65
