Terrific Thursday!

We began the day having art with Mr. Monaghan and physical education with Ms. Lovan.

During math we practiced addition and subtraction. We were given the sum 35 and we needed to figure out two numbers we could use to reach this number. Some examples we came up with: 25+10, 30+5, 15+20. We then figured out which numbers we could use to solve 35- __ = ___. We noticed that we could reverse the addition sentences and use the same numbers when subtracting. Example: 25+10=35 is 35-10=35. We then solved the same kinds of questions using the number 53. We also reflected on addition and subtraction strategies we have learned.

During UOI, we finished up our bridges and the writing portion of our project. Tomorrow will be the big test for our bridges!

After first recess and lunch we had French. We then wrote our homework in our agendas and then completed unfinished work. We also began working on our Math Reviews.

At the end of the day we continued learning about Nigeria. We inquired into the different kinds of music in Nigeria and how they are similar. We listened to Afrobeat and Juju music. Afrobeat, Juju, Fuji all use percussion instruments. We learned that percussion instruments are either hit or shaken to make a noise (piano, tambourine, drums).

We then had Nathan and Nathanial, MYP students, teach us a game that is played in Nigeria called Ata Soc. They taught us that this game is similar to charades. A chief of birds, fishes, and animals is chosen. The chief chooses a messenger to act out a bird, fish, or animal. The rest of the players sit on the floor with their feet out trying to figure out what kind of bird, fish, or animal the messenger is acting out. Once the messenger is done acting, they go to one of the players, touch their feet, and ask “what do you eat?” The player responds with what they think the messenger is acting out. The messenger does this with every player and if any of the players get the right answer, they get a point but if none of the players get the right answer, then the leader gets a point. We had so much fun playing this game!!
