Tremendous Thursday!

Spring has sprung!!

We began the day with math. First, we reviewed the homework from last night. This took a while because Ms. Jaskolka wanted to ensure we understood how to write and explain algebraic expressions. We are finding it most tricky when it comes to subtraction.

Example: 10 - x = a number subtracted from 10

X - 10 = a number decreased by 10

Today we focused on evaluating algebraic expressions.

Learning Goal: substitute a number for a variable in an algebraic expression

First, we did some examples as a class to check for understanding. Then we worked on textbook questions related to evaluating algebraic expressions.

Success Criteria:
-I can evaluate algebraic expressions

I understand:

-to evaluate an algebraic expression, replace a variable with a number, then simplify
-substitute consecutive numbers in an algebraic expression to get a pattern
-to use BEDMAS when evaluating algebraic expressions.

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we moved onto UOI. First, we shared the articles that we found of youths and adults who have been suspended, expelled, or fired because of comments or images they have posted online. We first shared these with a partner who assessed our researching and how well we responded to each answer. Next, we shared what we found as a class. We found out that many people have faced severe consequences for posting inappropriate content online and we know that we should not do so because anything that is posted online can be seen or viewed by anyone.

We then learned about a girl named Amy who chose to meet someone that she met online. She was very grateful that the police caught them but she realized that she wasn’t make good choices to trust someone that she did not know. She was very fortunate that nothing had happened to her and she tells her story as a cautionary tale for kids to know the dangers and risks of meeting someone that you meet online.

After second recess and lunch, we took up the questions for chapters 5 and 6 of our novel study and then had time to read chapters 7 and 8 answer questions about both chapters.

Enjoy your long weekend!!!
