Wonderful Wednesday!

Art's night fun!!

We began the day with an assembly on Apraxia awareness. We played a game where we experienced how someone who feel like who has apraxia.

Learning Goals: use a variable to represent a set of numbers

Frist we worked in partners to problem solve the following question:

Tehya won some money in a competition. She has two choices as to how she gets paid.

Choice 1: $20 per week for one week for one year
Choice 2: $400 cash now plus 12dollars per week for one year.

Which method would pay her more money? For what reason might she choose the method that pays less?

For each choice, write a rule you can use to calculate the total money she received at any time during the year.

We did some questions as a class and then worked on textbook questions related to algebraic expressions.

Success Criteria:

I understand that:
- an algebraic expression is a mathematical expression that contains a variable
- a variable in an algebraic expression represents a set of numbers
- variables are written in italics so they are not confused with units of measurement
I can
-write an algebraic expression for each statement given
-write an algebraic expression using words

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we moved onto UOI. First, we talked about cyberbullying and what it means to be a bystander. Then we discussed when we found ourselves as bystanders and what we did or could have done to stop the bulling that was occurring. Then we read a comic book as class and explored the effects of posting something online and how cyberbullying can affect someone and be difficult to escape from.

Then we dove into a conversation about fake and real friends. It is important that students understand that when they meet someone online, they do not know who they are and therefore need to be aware of red flags, such as asking for our phone number or home address. We watched a video to see how someone can act friendly and kind, but in reality, can be an online predator. We took notes as we watched.

We did a fun activity where Ms. Jaskolka read out various scenarios and we would raise up a red flag if we thought the statement read was a red flag or not (example: someone asks you to keep your friendship a secret from friends and family).

STUFF TO KNOW

  • Remember that not everyone you meet online is trustworthy.
  • No one that you meet online should ask you to keep secrets from your trusted adults.
  • Ask a trusted adult before sharing personal informationwith an online friend.
  • Be suspicious if an online “friend” tries to turn you against your friends and family.
  • Don’t accept gifts from people that you meet online.
  • real friend, whether you’ve met them in real life or online, won’t pressure you into doing anything that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Report anyone who sends you or asks you to send inappropriate messages and photos.
  • Be a good friend: talk to a trusted adult if someone you know is planning to meet offline.
  • If someone asks you to meet offline, tell a trusted adult immediately.
  • Don’t respond to people asking you for personal or inappropriate information.

After second recess and lunch we continued with the above activity and also began writing an email to a friend, explaining to them red flags to watch out for when making online friends.
