Wonderful Wednesday!

We began the day with Math. Today was our final lesson on equations.

Learning Goals: solve equations by inspection and by systematic trial:

-I ate 3 soda crackers with my soup at lunch. I have one left. How many soda crackers did I have to start with? (4) How do you know? (3+1=4)
-There are 25 copies of the daily newspaper in the paper box. There are 5 papers left. How many papers have been sols? (20) How do you know? (25-5 = 20)

Another example: On the way to school, 3 students get off the bus at the first stop. Seven get off at the next stop. Five give get off at the next stop. Ten get off at next stop. There are now 2 students left on the bus. How many students were on the bus when it left the school?

What equations could have been used? N represents the number of students on the bus when the bus left the school. So, n-3-7-5-10=2 or n-25 = 2; Twenty-five less than a number is 2
How can you use the equation to solve the problem? (I know that 27-25=2 so n=27)

We did more examples as a class and went through two strategies: inspection and systematic trial:

We then worked on textbook questions to show our understanding.

Questions 1-7 and 9, 10

Success Criteria:

I understand that:
-to solve an equation means to find the value of the variable that makes the equation true
-an equation can be solved by systematic trial or by inspection

I can:
-solve an equation by finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true
-solve an equation by systematic trial or by inspection

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we discussed chapter 8 of our novel study and we had a big conversation about the importance of asking questions and not just believing in something because someone told us to but because we have done our own questioning and researching and this is the decision we have come to and truly what we have decided to believe.
Then we had Music.

When we returned, we took up the questions for Chapter 9 and then moved onto UOI.

Learning Goal: Students learn to only accept ‘friends’ on their social networking sites that they already know in real life
We began by talking about the kinds of things we post online. “What are some of the things you talk about with your friends online? If you have a profile, what kind of personal information do you have on it? Who is on your friends list? Have your parents seen your page? What are some of your screen names?”
We then did an activity to see how someone can put any information online but can be a completely different person than who they say they are. Students read the shared profile on the outside of the envelope and decided if they would add them as a friend or not. Then students took turns looking at the information in the envelopes to reveal the true identity of the people we met. Some of them were who they said they are but many were not.
We then watched:  ‘Post-to-be-Private’and discussed what happened in the video. “What information about Allie does Slick find on her profile? What would you do differently if you were in Allie’s situation? How can Allie better protect herself online in the future?” After we discussed: “What are some positive aspects of social networking sites? What is friending? Why do people want to build up their friends list? What rules should be followed when adding ‘friends’ on social networking sites. What are the risks and guidelines that can be set when accepting someone as an online friend? We learned that we must know people in real life in order to accept them as an online friend.

Students then wrote a persuasive letter to help a fictional friend realise the potential dangers of using social networking sites.

What a busy day!!

Homework:

1.    Read Daily
2.    Novel study: read chapter 10 and answer chapter 9 questions
3.    Math review questions 1-4

4.    UOI finish letter
