Tremendous Thursday!

A note regarding speeches – Due to our growing population at SJA, this year speeches will be split into two days. On Thursday, February 7th, JK-Grade 2 will recite their poems and stories and on Friday, February 8th, Grade 4-8 will recite their speeches.

Jump Rope for Heart – It is that time again! We will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart on Thursday, February 14th. Donation packages have been sent home. You can make a pledge using cash or you can donate on the website - jumpropeforheart.ca. House points will be rewarded to each student who brings in donations. If we meet our school goal of $2500, students will be rewarded with a fun activity. Let’s see what we can do SJA!

A note from Ms. Melissa regarding re-registration packages - Just a friendly reminder that re-registration packages are due no later than Monday, February 11.  After this time, spots will be opened up to the public and your child will not be guaranteed a space for next year.  We look forward to seeing you back for next year!

A note from Mr. Foster, Ms. Gandy, and Ms. Brasil:
As part of our summative assessment, the Grade One classes have decided to open a market to complement our organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks, and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 25, 28 and 29. The market will take place all day Thursday, January. 24th and Friday, January. 25th. All profits made will be donated to the Sick Kid’s Hospital.

Book Fair – Ms. Hayward and her book fair crew have already begun discussing our book fair. It will be taking place during the week of February 4th to 8th

Don't miss out on your chance to reserve your spot for our March Break Camp!!

First, we had a presentation from the heart and stroke foundation about the fundraising event ‘Jump rope for heart’. We learned that in raising money we will be helping other kids get better! An envelope went home explaining more about this event and you can also go to ,jumpropeforheart.ca, for more information.

During Math, we reviewed how to measure the area for a parallelogram.

We will learn how to find the area of a triangle on Monday.

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we reviewed how trade occurred before the age of exploration. We discussed how goods came from Asia, along the silk road, to Baghdad, which was the trading centre before the age of exploration. Items such as silk and spices were then brought to Genoa and Venice. European traders and merchants would also bring items to Genoa and Venice. These items were then sent along the west coast of Europe, by land and river routes of Europe, Africa, and Persia. By the 1400s these trade routes were flourishing. By 1453, the Ottoman empire captured the trading centre at Constantinople and as a result placed high taxes on goods from China and India. So now Europeans are looking for other ways to reach Asia; one solution, using water instead of land!!!  We learned about Vasco da Gama who did just that in 1498! He was able to reach India by sea! We also talked about Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailor who sailed on behalf of Spain looking for India but instead ended up at Central and South America.

Students learned how the English followed in the search for a short cut to Asia with another Italian sailor, Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot). Students should add Portuguese, Spanish, French and English explorers to their timeline and exploration chart. Our UOI test is on Tuesday.

After second recess and lunch we had physical education with Mr. Orr.
