Tremendous Thursday!

We first reviewed how to find the area of a parallelogram and a triangle and then our learning goal for today was to find the area of a trapezoid.
A trapezoid
-how would you describe it? (it has 4 sides and two sides are parallel)
-Why are rectangles, squares and parallelograms also trapezoids? (Each has 2 pairs of parallel sides. A trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides, so these figures are trapezoids.)
-Which figures can you divide a trapezoid into? (Rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms)

We learned how we can divide the trapezoid into squares, rectangles, parallelograms and triangles to help us find the area of a trapezoid.

Success Criteria for today:
-I can find the area of a trapezoid by dividing it into other figures such as triangles, rectangles and parallelograms

Then we had French.

After first recess and lunch we began working on our summative project. Our goal for today was to finish half of our graphic organizer researching about our chosen explorer with our partner.

Then we had Music.

When we returned, we continued researching for our UOI project.

After second recess and lunch we worked on our speech. Most of us are finished reason paragraph 1, 2, and 3 and Ms. Jaskolka has looked them over. We need to re-write our paragraphs with the corrections and then move onto our counter-argument.

When you counter-argue, you consider a possible argument against your speech topic or some aspect of your reasoning. It can be a persuasive and (in both senses of the word) disarming tactic. It allows you to anticipate doubts and pre-empt objections that a skeptical reader might have; it presents you as the kind of person who weighs alternatives before arguing for one, who confronts difficulties instead of sweeping them under the rug, who is more interested in discovering the truth than winning a point.

Two examples are given in the speech duo-tang. One about blow dryers and one about sharks. We read them and reviewed them as a class so students understand how to write a counter-argument.
