Marvelous Monday!!

We began the day having French with Mdm. Stella.

We then moved on to Math.

The Grade 3’s worked on an addition and subtraction package. Afterwards, they moved on to multiplication and division.

The grade 2’s began unit 1: Sorting and Patterning. Ms. Jaskolka gave us various items to sort and to explain our sorting rule. We were given tape, glue sticks, scissors, white board markers, erasers, and white board erasers. Each of us were given the opportunity to come up with a sorting rule. Some examples:
-All items shaped like a cylinder
-All items used on the white board
-Sorted by colour
-Items we use to write
-Items we use on paper
Afterwards, we showed our understanding in our math books.

The grade 3’s began their first unit. Students began making counting patterns using a number line. Ms. Jaskolka showed us a number line on the white board from 0-30. We first began at 3 and counted by 5 (3, 8, 13, 18). We noticed that 3 and 8 repeated. We then counted backwards by 2 from 18. We also noticed that when counting forward, the arrow moved forward and backwards when we counted backwards. We then explored the math text together. We were given various number pattern questions and we worked through them using a number line (example: start at 31 and count by 5). We also paid attention to the repeating pattern. Students then moved on to pg. 6 and 7 in their MMS books.

After first recess and lunch, we wrote in our agendas and then had physical education with Ms. Lovan.

When students returned we moved onto to UOI. Today we focused on identifying important features of a map. We read “There’s a map in my lap” by Tish Rabe and discussed the various features of a map (compass, longitude and latitude liens) and the different kinds of maps that we could use (world, city, room). We also learned a fun way to remember North, East, South West: Never eat soggy wheat/never eat sour watermelons. We then wrote North, East, South, West on a compass and then used this to write directions on a town map. We will continue these tomorrow.

When we went out for recess, we played a “north, east, south, west” game. Ms. Jaskolka pointed which way was north, and called out a direction for us to run to. So much fun learning!

After lunch, we began lesson 1 spelling words. Grade 3 students worked in their spelling books and Grade 2 students wrote sentences for each word (our book should be here by next week).

At the end of the day, we began our novel study. We will be reading Chocolate Fever. We explored making predictions today.
