Wonderful Wednesday!

The summative project, along with two rubrics (one for the written and one for the oral presentation) went home today. Please sign both rubrics and return the whole package to school tomorrow (including the student’s written work)

We began the day having French with Mdm. Stella.

During UOI, we reviewed what we spoke about yesterday:

We also learned that we come across media everyday and that media tries to express a message to us. So when we are looking at various forms of media, it is important we try and understand the message that is being expressed to us. If we do not understand, we can ask questions.

We looked at an advertisement for Coca Cola; we were reading and viewing media. We looked for the message (to buy coke) and we explained how we knew this is was the message (the catchy phrase: have a coke; the woman is happy drinking a coke; the logo for coca cola). We also discussed the techniques that were being used: graphics (picture) and colour (bright).
We can see/view media messages. We watched a Shopkin commercial and discussed why it made most of us want to go out and buy more; we went over the techniques posted above.

We can also hear media. We listened to an African Lion Safari commercial that we would hear on the radio and have come to understand that sound is an important technique when we cannot see media (we heard a jingle and animal noises).

Afterwards, we worked on a signs and symbol sheet where we discovered the messages being expressed by each one. We also listed the different types of media we know and where we would hear and view them.

When we were finished, we continued working on our learner profile and attitude sheet from yesterday.

After second recess and lunch, students had physical education with Ms. Lovan.
In math, we were estimating with large numbers. We looked at a picture of people using paddles and we estimated how much we thought there was.

As we counted by 2’s, we decided if we wanted to change our estimate. Students then created addition and subtraction stories and sentences for another picture that had 20 people paddling and 2 playing music on a boat.
Addition story: There are 20 people paddling on a boat. 2 more are playing music on a boat. There are 22 people all together on the boat.
Addition sentence: 20+2=22
Subtraction story: There are 22 people paddling on a boat. 2 decide to dance and play music. Now there are 20 people left paddling the boat.

After second recess and lunch, we did a retell of chapter 4 and read chapter 5 of Chocolate Fever. Henry needed to go to the hospital, and Dr. Fargo discovered that Henry’s spots are actually chocolate spots!

Afterwards, we did a pumpkin writing activity using adjectives to describe a pumpkin that we would make in visuals arts. Students worked on their rough copies today. The first sentence introduced the pumpkin by giving him/her a name. The second sentence described the colour and size or shape of the pumpkin. The third sentence was all about the number of teeth the pumpkin has. The forth sentence described the pumpkin using one or two words. The last sentence told how the pumpkin makes us feel. Doing this activity will help us use more adjectives and describing words when we are writing.
